

Selma Bornstein was born at home on September 25, 1915. She was the first born child of Hilda and Morris Herman. Selma was born in East Orange, New Jersey but soon after the family moved to Newark, New Jersey. She first went to Peshine Avenue and Avon Avenue elementary schools but graduated eighth grade from Maple Avenue school. Selma completed Southside High School in 1933. Selma went two years to Miss Hunter’s School to become a kindergarten/first grade teacher. After graduation, she obtained employment as a clerk at Kresge’s department store. This is where she met her husband, Louis. Selma and Louis married February 14, 1937. They initially lived in North Arlington, New Jersey. Their daughter Susan was born April 5, 1939. Selma worked part-time at Arnold Constable and Saks Fifth Avenue. Later the family moved to Hillside, Newark, and Elizabeth New Jersey.
Louis and Selma relocated to Margate, Florida in retirement. They remained in Florida for 14 years eventually returning to New Jersey to live in South Orange in 2002.
Selma was the proud grandmother of six granddaughters: Staci Kessler (Mark), Lisa Weisenstein (Mitch), Jamie White (Ashley), Jordie Bornstein (Audrey), Hallie Banziger (Walter), and Brette Pedrick (John). She was also the proud great grandmother of 12 great grandchildren: Dylan and Hailee Kessler, Cooper Weisenstein, Amanda, Madison, and Brayden White, Laine, Elliotte, and Wesley Banziger, and Rory, Rhys, and Ewan Pedrick. She also maintained a long-term and committed relationship with her son-in-law, Robert Rudnick, and daughter-law, Marcy Tepper Bornstein.
Selma was preceded in death by her husband Louis on October 22, 2004 and her beloved daughter Susan on August 10, 2006.
