

Alice Elaine Dunham, beloved mother, grandmother, teacher, and devoted woman of faith, passed away on February 18, 2025. Born on May 28, 1940, in Detroit to Anthony and Ann (Barkus) Pavelites, Alice lived a life enriched by education, service, and a deep love for those around her.
Alice pursued her passion for learning at the University of Detroit, earning her bachelor’s degree before continuing her studies at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, where she obtained her master’s degree and Madonna University where she continued her master’s level journey. She dedicated her career to shaping young minds as an English and creative writing teacher, retiring from Livonia Public Schools after many years of inspiring students. Her love for literature extended beyond the classroom as she led publicity events for Friends of the Livonia Public Library and served as a judge for the Detroit Free Press writing contests, always encouraging creativity and excellence in writing.
A woman of unwavering Catholic faith, Alice was deeply involved in the St. Aidan Catholic Church community. She found joy in singing with the choir, serving on the disabilities committee, and contributing to church fundraisers. Her faith guided her life, and her kindness and generosity touched all who knew her.
Alice had a zest for life that shone through in her passions. She enjoyed nature walks, musical theater, leading Michigan Metro Girl Scouts with annual calendar sales events, and serving as a Brownie Troop Leader. She was a true foodie who loved exploring Livonia’s local restaurants and sharing meals with family and friends. A lifelong Elvis fan, she found joy in his music.
To cherish her memory Alice leaves behind her daughters, Carolyn (Jeff) Mayer and Julianne Dunham, and her adored grandson, Jacob Mayer.
In addition to her parents, Alice is preceded in death by her sister Ruth Plant.
Memorial donations in Alice’s honor may be made to St. Aidan Catholic Church, supporting the community she held so dear or to the Michigan Humane Society.
Alice’s warmth, wisdom, and unwavering faith will be forever missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her.
