With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Calvin Ernest Strom, who left this world on March 7, 2026, surrounded by the family he dearly loved. Born on September 14, 1936, Cal lived a long, generous, and gracious life, marked by kindness, strength, and an unwavering willingness to lend a helping hand.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Carol (Maurer) Strom; children, Linda Strom (Linda Burke), Susan (John) Gessert, Margaret Strom, and Erik (Lori) Strom; grandchildren, Ellen (Rami) Harb, Jack (Danielle) Gessert, Emma Gessert, Julia Gessert, Jacob (Lindsey) Strom, and Nicholas Strom; and great‑grandchildren, Nora and Lena Harb, and Louise Gessert.
Cal graduated from Cooley High School in Detroit and the University of Michigan, remaining a lifelong wolverine. He taught high school math for 4 years, before transitioning to a 32-year career at Ford Motor Company.
A naturally generous soul, Cal devoted much of his retirement to service. He volunteered with the AARP Tax Aide Program, eventually serving as State Chairperson, offering his time and expertise. His faith was central to him, and he was deeply involved at First Presbyterian Church of Northville, serving as both Deacon and Elder. His adventurous spirit carried him all the way to Ukraine, where he helped build houses.
Cal loved sports. In addition to watching them, he delighted in cheering on his children and grandchildren, celebrating every goal, race, dance performance, and game. He managed the Livonia Girls Ice Hockey team to a National Title in 1980. He also passed on his love of skiing to his family through countless trips to Steamboat Springs and Winter Park, Colorado, creating lasting memories. His weekends were reserved for rooting on his beloved U of M teams, often alongside his dear friends Marge and Jerry Collinge
Some of Cal’s happiest days were spent at the family cottage in Lake City, MI, next door to his beloved brother Kenny, sister-in-law Harriet Strom, and surrounded by extended family. Whether sharing a meal, fixing something that needed fixing, or simply enjoying the time together, Cal brought warmth and a sense of humor to every gathering. He also loved spending time with his good friends, Pat and Bill Tancill, and Sue and Dick LaBurn.
Funeral services will be held Monday, March 16 at First Presbyterian Church of Northville, 200 E. Main St, Northville, MI. Visitation begins at 10:00 am, with services at 11:00 am and a luncheon to follow. The family would like to thank the staff at Angela Hospice in Livonia for the compassion and comfort they gave him.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor his memory are invited to make a donation to Angela Hospice Livonia (www.angelahospice.org) or Woodhaven Retirement Community Adult Day Services (www.woodhaven-retirement.com).
