Carrie was born January 16, 1936, and raised in Corktown, Detroit, a daughter of late Pacific and Elizabeth Vella. Growing up a devout Catholic, she attended Holy Trinity Grade School and St. Vincent High School. Proudly after graduating, she was employed at Blue Cross Blue Shield, until she left for her true vocation – a full-time mother and homemaker.
Carrie met the love of her life, Bill, in 1954 at a jukebox joint in Detroit near the railroad tracks, where Bill first laid eyes on her. She loved nothing more than raising their four daughters with grace, strength, and a deep sense of faith. When spending time with them, she felt as if she were surrounded by a beautiful garden of flowers. Carrie treasured the many holiday gatherings spent with extended family, especially her nieces and nephews. Her home became a haven, a place where all the grandchildren grew up side by side, surrounded by unconditional love and gentle guidance.
In her later years, she was blessed to watch her great-grandchildren grow, a joy that filled her heart immensely. Carrie simply found happiness in sitting in her favorite spot, iPad in hand, keeping everyone in line with a smile and a little “bossiness”, a lot of times with her classic catchphrase - “whatever.” Proud of her Maltese heritage, she lovingly shared her recipes and traditions, which will be carried on through her loved ones. Her Catholic faith was the foundation of her life - guiding her actions, comforting her in hardship, and inspiring everyone blessed to know her. Carrie leaves a legacy of love for family and deep faith that will live on through generations.
Carrie will lie in state on Monday, August 11, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at St. Michael the Archangel Parish, 11441 Hubbard, Livonia, Michigan 48150, followed by a funeral mass beginning at 10:30 AM. She will be laid to rest at Holy Sepulchre Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory are appreciated to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen.
