Donna was the beloved wife of many cherished years to John Szopko, with whom she shared a life built on love, faith, and enduring friendship. She was a devoted and supportive mother to Rachel (Troy) Sowell, and the proud grandmother of Luke Sowell, who brought light and laughter into her days. She is also survived by her dear brother, Tom (Noelle) Mehlhorn.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Mildred Mehlhorn, and her sister, Nancy Mehlhorn, all of whom she carried in her heart throughout her life.
Donna had a warm and giving nature. She enjoyed walking and knitting, but her greatest joy came from helping others. Whether lending a hand, sharing kind words, or simply being present when someone needed her, she lived a life of quiet generosity. She truly loved people and found meaning in caring for those around her.
A woman of deep faith, Donna was an active and faithful member of NorthRidge Church, where she formed lasting friendships and lived out her values of compassion and service. Her grace, humility, and gentle spirit touched everyone she met.
A memorial service to honor Donna’s life will be held on Saturday, May 10, 2025, at NorthRidge Church, 49555 N Territorial Rd, Plymouth Township, MI 48170. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m., followed by a memorial service at 11:00 a.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Donna’s name to Angela Hospice or the Karmanos Cancer Institute.
Donna will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her kindness and quiet strength will live on in the hearts of those who loved her.
