Garrett Edward Cotter was born on December 11th 1946 to parents Jeremiah and Josephine Cotter, as one of six children, he is survived by his two sisters Margaret also known as (Peg) and Colleen in addition to his brother Jim's wife Cathy. He knew loss at an early age when his youngest sister Geraldine passed away. As a young adult he lost his sister Rosemary and later his brother and best friend Jim.
Gary grew up in Detroit and graduated from Mackenzie High School in June 1965. After graduation he joined the national guard and served his tour of duty. After returning he worked as a fence installer with his dad and brother and eventually went out on his own.
He met his wife who is known as Pat, Patty or PD at a Daily's drive-In. Married for 54 years and counting, they have two children, Sean and Jenny along with son-in-law Andy.
Sean got his love for sports from Gary who encouraged him to play hockey, baseball and soccer. Jenny's gift for finding just the right card for every occasion came from her Dad who saved every card he received.
When anyone met Gary for the first time his beautiful blue eyes were what you noticed. His closet filled with blue shirts that made his eyes sparkle and got him complements.
Not having many hobbies Gary was always tinkering and working with his hands. Working outside was a favorite pastime, but he didn't get much done, since he had to meet all the neighbors and children with their pets in the neighborhood and talk.
Gary's one true passion was music, especially doo-wop on any given weekend. From Spring to Fall you would find him and his wife listening and dancing to music at church festivals. He enjoyed many groups but his favorite was the Reflections.
Gary had a strong heart and fought a hard battle with lung disease, outliving the expected years. He never complained, he just kept trying to do the most and best he could.
Gary was a family man which always came first. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother and friend to many. He was also the kindest and sweetest man you would ever be able to meet. May he rest in peace.
A memorial mass will be held at St.Michael the Archangel Parish on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at 11am (gathering at 10am). In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in his honor to the American Lung Association.
