John was the beloved husband and partner of over 17 wonderful years to Amanda and a devoted, loving father to his twin boys, Eli and Mason, who were the absolute center of his world. He was the cherished son of Frank and Kathleen Kurtz and Son-in-Law to Jeff (Penny) Richardson. Dearest brother to Matt Kreager (Tonya), Michele Kreager, and Patricia (Joel) Churchill. Brother-in-Law to Jeff (Christine) Richardson and Anthony (Lindsay) Richardson. He was a loving uncle to Ethan, Monica, Natalie, and Wyatt.
He was preceded in death by his beloved fur babies, his cat Max and his faithful “such a good dog” Ares, who were constant companions through many of his adventures.
John worked as a Senior Systems Engineer with Cambium Learning Group since 2018. He had a true gift with computers — there was not a problem he could not solve or something he could not figure out. Technology came naturally to him, and he loved the challenge of making things work.
Outside of work, John embraced life with energy, humor, and dedication. In high school, he was a proud member of the ski team, and although he no longer competed in college, his love for skiing never faded. Whether he was slip-and-sliding with Amanda in costumes, paddle boarding, skiing with his friends, or racing down the hill in a gorilla suit while his friend wore a banana suit, John brought laughter wherever he went. He had a playful spirit that made ordinary moments unforgettable.
He loved being outdoors, especially winter camping — something he often did with his loyal dog, Ares, before his passing. He also enjoyed paddle boarding and any opportunity to be outside.
John was also a black belt in Tang Soo Do. He proudly signed his boys up for karate and joined shortly after so he could train alongside them. Martial arts held special meaning in their family — Amanda grew up practicing and became a master — and John knew how important it was to her that their boys learn as well. True to who he was, he did not just encourage them from the sidelines; he stepped onto the mat with them, sharing in the discipline, growth, and accomplishment every step of the way.
Most of all, John treasured the time he spent with Amanda and his boys. Whether on big adventures or in quiet everyday moments, being together was what mattered most to him. He will be remembered for his selflessness, his loyalty, his sharp mind, and his warm heart. He gave generously of himself and loved deeply.
