LIVONIA –
Joe passed away peacefully, surrounded by beloved family members, on September 5, 2018 at the age of 86. Beloved husband of Shirley, devoted and loving father to Stephen. Dear brother to Margaret (the late Jack) Ferguson, Konnie (Walter) Wild, the late Mary (the late Wolfgang) Schulz and the late Gerhard Weis. Uncle to many beloved nieces and nephews, and grandnieces and grandnephews.
Joe lived a very full life, with many interesting turns along the way. He was born in Toronto, Canada to the late John and Maria. He was raised in Germany after his family moved there, and could not leave due to the outbreak of World War II. He had countless stories and recollections of the experiences of his youth that he loved to share. He emigrated back to Canada, where he apprenticed in the glass industry, and served in the Canadian Forces Corps of Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers.
He moved to Detroit, where he began laying the foundation for the rest of his life. He met Shirley, and married her in 1959; he helped his siblings and parents to relocate to Detroit; he worked for various glass companies, including Chrysler’s glass plant, before starting his own glass company in 1962. He and his brother owned and operated Weis Brothers Glass Company in Detroit for over 40 years.
Music was a big part of Joe’s life, and he took great joy in playing the drums in the Celtic Pipes and Drums band for many years. He loved spending time at his cabin in the woods in west Michigan, where he enjoyed walking in the forest and tending his small orchard. Joe will be remember by many for his hearty, loud laugh.
Visitation for Joe is on Sunday, September 9 at the Harry J. Will Funeral Home, 37000 Six Mile Road (east of Newburgh), Livonia from 1:00pm-8:00pm with a scripture service at 7pm. In-state 10am Monday, September 10 at St. Edith Catholic Church, 15089 Newburgh Road, Livonia until time of mass at 10:30am. Internment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Southfield. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit, or the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center Philanthropic Support Fund.
