Cherished wife of the late Bob Nielsen for 55 years. Loving mother of Robert (Linda) Nielsen, Curt (Holly) Nielsen and Peggy (Dave) Nielsen-Anderson. Beloved grandmother of Bobby Nielsen, Lisey Nielsen, Hanna Anderson, Stefan Nielsen, Ben Anderson, Nicole Nielsen and Gabriela Nielsen. Treasured sister of Pat Dunsmore, Ed (Cindy) Haslem and Madalynne Garceau as well as those who preceded her in death, Mary (Lou) Sanecki, Paul Garceau, Leo Dunsmore, Louise (Hank) Weis, George Haslem, Johnny (Stella) Haslem and Leo (Rita) Haslem. Beloved aunt, cousin, Godmother, and friend to many.
Margaret lived a passionate life. Together with Bob, they spent time traveling and enjoying the company of many treasured family and friends. She loved spending time on the beach of Lake Michigan, bowling and golfing with friends, and certainly sharing her love of God with many–never missing an opportunity to pray with someone.
Margaret left Memphis where she grew up, to train as a nurse, spending time in California before taking her beloved role of OB nurse at Mount Carmel Hospital in Detroit. Upon returning from California, she met Bob at a "basement party" which was the first of many memories made together. For many years she lived on Magnolia Parkway in Southfield where there was always the opportunity to play some cards, throw a party and/or eat some ice cream. The friends of Magnolia became family.
She was also an avid volunteer, working as a children's grief group facilitator at SandCastles Grief Support Program for almost 10 years. Many fall football Saturdays were spent at the Big House with Bob or throwing UM vs. OSU parties, cheering “The Victors” until the end of the last football game she attended in 2019.
Margaret was a woman of faith. She joined the School of Evangelization at Duns Scotus and did the 2 year internship in Ignatian Spirituality at Manresa Jesuit Retreat House in Birmingham MI. She was an active parishioner at St. Beatrice in Southfield and then St.Gerard/Corpus Christi Catholic Church. Her smile, sass, and joy will be greatly missed by all those who had the great pleasure of knowing and loving her as Margaret, Mom, and possibly her favorite--Gram.
