Born on October 11, 1937, in Kraśnik, Poland, Marianna was the daughter of the late Bolesław and Wiktoria Karczmarski. From a young age, she exhibited strength, compassion, and a deep sense of responsibility—qualities that would define her life. She graduated from nursing school in Poland in 1953 and, seeking new opportunities, bravely immigrated to the United States in 1959.
Marianna devoted her life to caring for others. She worked as a Registered Nurse for over four decades, beginning with 25 years in the Coronary Care Unit at Hurley Hospital in Flint, Michigan. She later worked in an ophthalmologist’s office before concluding her nursing career at a long-term care facility. Even after retiring in 2005, Marianna’s nurturing spirit remained steadfast as she continued to care selflessly for her family.
She was a loving and devoted mother to her daughter, Krystyna Loconte, and cherished her role as grandmother to Alexa Loconte. She is also survived by her sisters, Teresa (Edward) Gora and Roma (the late Stanisław) Świetlicka, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Marianna was preceded in death by her first husband, Jan Zupa, who passed away in 1974; her second husband, John Fisher, who passed away in 2005; her son-in-law Vito Loconte; her brother Marek Karczmarski; and her parents.
Faith played a central role in Marianna’s life. While living in the Flint area, she was a parishioner at All Saints Catholic Church. While she attended All Saints she became an active member in the church Choir. In more recent years, she found spiritual community at St. Aidan Catholic Church in Livonia, where she attended regularly with her daughter.
Beyond her professional and spiritual life, Marianna found joy in life’s simple and beautiful pleasures. She was an avid gardener who took great pride in her vibrant flower beds and bountiful vegetable garden. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting, and baking—always ready with a tray of homemade pastries or a warm blanket for someone in need. Her heart remained closely tied to her homeland, and she cherished every trip back to Poland. Marianna also had a deep love of travel, especially cruises, which allowed her to explore the world with wonder and gratitude.
