As a child, Norm enjoyed playing outside, making some lifelong friendships. He wrestled, played hockey, and baseball. He enjoyed going up north, to ride dirt bikes with his dad. He developed a passion for music because his dad played in a band. Norm picked up a love for playing the drums. He was in a garage band with his friend Ryan. He began working to support his music addiction at the age of 13. He washed dishes at Canterbury Palace in Redford. At 15, he worked at Mama Mia’s Pizzeria. He would go on to work at Farmington Cycle World, in the Parts Dept. He left Farmington Cycle to install cable for Quality Communications. At one point, he was installing cable in the morning, and realized he had an opportunity to work nights as well. He got a job at FedEx Express as an afternoon Package Handler, in May 1997. Just over a month later, he met the woman that would become his wife, Kristal. They became fast friends, enjoying each other’s company playing pool at Snookers. After a somewhat brief courtship, Norm and Kristal married on November 19, 2000. Norm, always trying to figure out a way to make more money (especially since he hated installing cable), decided to become a driver. He worked some of the most challenging routes. Routes that would have to be adjusted, most times broken into smaller routes, because no one could run the routes as efficiently as Norm, once he left them. He wanted to pursue his dream of becoming a police officer in 2001. However, the birth of their first child, Koryn, made him think twice. He didn’t want to put his life on the line, when he knew he would always want to be a father to his baby girl. He did another stint at FedEx, but once again, always looking for a better opportunity, left to work at Suburban Boring Company with his good friend Rob. The economic crisis of 2003 coincided with the birth of his first son, Kurtis. Times were tough at Suburban Boring, and after several years, and a layoff because of the recession, Norm found his way back to Fedex. Both Norm and Kristal were working the A.M. shift in the Southfield FedEx facility when they found out that they were having their second son, Kato. Norm transferred to the Novi FedEx facility, and after many more years as an accomplished driver, he decided to take a leap, and applied for an office staff position. A position which he was more than qualified for. Norm was promoted to Operations Lead in 2021, and he brought all of his extensive on-road knowledge, and his sheer determination to excel at his new job. In pure fashion, he also brought his contagious sense of humor and quick wit. He was a breath of fresh air to an oftentimes stressful environment.
Norm enjoyed his free time too. He played for, and managed, the Phillies Mens softball team in Redford for many years. He was in a bowling league. He enjoyed fowling, beer festivals, and concerts. He became an exceptional poker player. And, as he got older, he began to settle into the game of golf. He never had an opportunity to get a quality set of clubs, and because of that, his game suffered. When he played with his friends’ quality irons, he saw a major improvement in his game. However, the game that he was nearly unmatched in; in enthusiasm and talent, was corn hole.
Norm left us too soon. He took his last breath on April 14, 2022. He leaves a lifetime of love and cherished memories with friends and family. He is survived by both of his parents, Norman and Cheryl. His wife, Kristal, and their three children, Koryn, Kurtis, and Kato. His brother in law, Alton. Aunts, uncles, cousins, and a plethora of brothers from other mothers, including Mike Brown and Joe Niestroy. As well as a host of his friends, who all loved him deeply.
A visitation for Norman will be held Friday, April 22, 2022 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM. A funeral service will occur Saturday, April 23, 2022 at 11:00 AM.
