Born on May 12, 1933, in Detroit, Michigan, Paul was the son of the late Paul and Elnora (Taube) Hunt. From a young age, Paul had music in his soul. A proud graduate of Cass Technical High School—during its era of musical prestige—he was a standout percussionist. So gifted was he that by the age of 16, Paul was already performing professionally as a drummer.
Music remained a defining rhythm throughout his life. A renowned percussionist in the Detroit area, Paul became a respected figure in the local jazz scene. He was a lifelong member of both the Detroit Federation of Musicians Union and the Greater Detroit Jazz Society. Whether on stage or off, music was never far from his heart.
Paul also built a successful career as an electrical estimator, playing a key role in numerous commercial projects across the region. Notably, he helped lead several major developments at Detroit’s iconic Cobo Hall.
In the early 1970s, Paul met Diann Robinson while performing in a jazz band. She was a waitress; he was the drummer. The spark between them led to a love story that spanned over two decades until Diann’s passing in 1994. Their years together were filled with work, laughter, and a deep affection for each other that was unrivaled. Their love for boating on their boat, the “Magic Duck”, found them exploring all of the great lakes with their friends from the Drifters Club.
In later years, Paul found enduring companionship with Mary Jane “MJ” Falls, who brought continued joy, love, and a newfound enthusiasm for the jazz scene and old jazz friends. Paul had many loves in his life, but MJ was his last true love. His affection and gentleness for her were obvious to everyone who knew them.
Beyond his professional accomplishments and music career, Paul was a passionate baseball coach, Little League coach, and a constant spectator at his kids' and grandkids' sporting and theatrical events.
Paul’s legacy continues through his loving family: His children: Paula (George) Hebert, Pamela (Mark) Esshaki, Ric (Gina) Holloway, Randall (LeeAnn) Kowalski, Kenneth (Molly) Kowalski, and Kelly (Scot) Smith. His grandchildren: Joel (Marissa), Rachel (James), Melanie (Nathan), Amanda (Lachlan), Mark (Melissa), Ricky, Patti, Kyle (Jennifer), Keely, Kristie (Todd), Kurt, Kory, Evan (Kate), Brett (Kelsey), Kirsten, and Karly. He was also blessed with seventeen great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, who brought him immense pride and joy.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, his beloved wife Diann, and many dear friends and fellow musicians who welcomed him into their eternal jam session.
Paul Hunt’s life was a symphony of talent, hard work, love, and rhythm—he lived with grace, gave generously of his time and talent, and left the world a little more beautiful through both his music and his legacy.
He will be dearly missed and fondly remembered.
In accordance with Paul’s wishes, cremation will take place.
A Memorial Service will take place at noon on Friday, September 12, 2025, at the Harry J. Will Funeral Home, 37000 Six Mile Road, Livonia, Michigan 48152. Paul’s family will receive visitors on Friday from 10:00 am until the time of the service at noon.
