Philip was a remarkable man with a generous heart and a deep sense of duty. He proudly served in the British Army for many years before moving to the United States. Upon arriving in his new country, he registered for the draft but was never called to serve. Still, his patriotic spirit led him to dedicate his time to the James Hannan Sea Cadet Program in Detroit, where he served as a Lieutenant Commander. Through this program, he mentored youth, believing wholeheartedly that if he could help even one young person find a better path, it was all worth it.
On July 9, 1970, Philip married Jean McAlees, in Dewsbury, England. A few months later, they began their life together in the United States. Philip worked for many years as a manager for an international shipping company, specializing in sea freight. His passion for the water and love of travel made his career a perfect fit.
Philip had many interests and hobbies. He was a former member and of Commodore of the Detroit Boat Club in 1987 and enjoyed boating and spending time near the water. A true history enthusiast, he loved reading about military history and collecting memorabilia. He also loved playing the piano and accordion, often filling the house with music. When he wasn’t volunteering with the Sea Cadets, Philip could often be found in his garage working on his car. He was an animal lover, especially fond of dogs.
To cherish his memory, Philip leaves behind his devoted wife of 55 years, Jean; his daughter, Stacey (Jim) Hickey; and three grandchildren, Jacob Winteringham, Brian Hickey, and Olivia Dasovic, née Hickey. He is also survived by his sister, Joan Browne, and brothers-in-law, Alastair McAlees and Raymond McAlees.
In addition to his parents, Philip was preceded in death by his beloved son, Todd Winteringham, and siblings Dorothy, Norman, and Dennis.
A memorial gathering will be held from 11am to 2pm on Saturday, November 15, at Harry J Will Funeral Home with a memorial service following at 2pm.
Philip’s legacy of kindness, service, and integrity will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
