

Richard V. Szeman, 84, of Farmington Hills, MI, passed away peacefully on October 2, 2024. He was born to Joseph and Beatrice (nee Stark) Szeman in Edon, Ohio, on April 21, 1940. Richard lived a life filled with love, family, and dedication to his work and passions.
He earned a Bachelor’s Degree with Honors in Finance and Accounting from Assumption University in Windsor, Ontario, where he also played basketball throughout his collegiate career. Richard later obtained his CPA license and worked in public accounting and ultimately as an independent consultant. He spent time in the CFO capacity at the Detroit Zoological Society, University Liggett School, DIA, and others. Most recently he was the Finance Director at Community Care Services, a community mental health care agency in Lincoln Park, MI. He finally retired a month before his 83rd birthday, and to no surprise by his family started working again at Detroit Central City Community Mental Health organization in a part-time capacity up until his passing.
A devoted fan of Detroit sports, especially the Tigers and Lions, Richard found joy in cheering on his favorite teams. He also had a passion for casinos, spending many enjoyable hours playing poker and blackjack. Sundays were a special time for Richard, marked by a long-standing tradition of breakfast at a local diner, a ritual he cherished.
Richard’s love for his family was evident in the many game nights spent together and family travel adventures. He will be remembered for his warm presence, sharp mind, humor, and joy he brought to those around him.
Richard is survived by his children, Sue Meacham (Alan), Andrea Youmans (Harry), and Glenn Szeman; grandchildren, Ashley Richard, Andrew Meacham, Troy Youmans, Jack Meacham, Aaron Youmans, Zoe Szeman, Cole Szeman, and Clara Szeman; sister, Judy Szeman. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Bob Szeman, and Joe Szeman; son, Craig Szeman, and his former wife Penny Colthurst.
He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and all who knew him.
Following Richard’s wishes cremation will take place. In lieu of flowers, contributions are appreciated to the Detroit Zoological Society.
A memorial gathering for Richard will be held Tuesday, October 8, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM at Harry J Will Funeral Home, 37000 W. Six Mile Road, Livonia, Michigan 48152.
