

Sonnia Marie Cummins, age 84, of Dearborn, Michigan, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2025, surrounded by the love of her family and caring caregivers. Born on January 14, 1941, in Martins Ferry, Ohio, she was the beloved daughter of the late Wanda and Steve Kalonick.
A devoted mother, grandmother, neighbor, and friend, Sonnia is survived by her children Debbie Sue Cummins, Melissa (Scott) Fassett, and Jimmy Cummins; and her cherished grandchildren Ashley Fassett, Christina Fassett, Stephen Cummins, and James Cummins. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Jim Cummins, whom she met on a blind date and married on May 19, 1963. The two shared a beautiful life together until Jim’s passing just 48 days ago. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Barbara (Larry) Darrow.
Sonnia’s love for history and education found a home at Greenfield Village in Dearborn, where she worked for over a decade as a docent, guiding visitors through historical landmarks and sharing stories of the past. Later, she served as the director for senior citizens at the Dearborn Senior Center, working as an escort on trips to beautiful churches, casinos, and fun hot spots. This is where her warmth and dedication left a lasting impact on the community she loved.
Rooted deeply in her Catholic faith, Sonnia was a longtime member of Sacred Heart Parish in Dearborn and frequently attended mass at churches throughout the area. Her faith was a guiding light in her life.
Known for her vibrant social spirit, Sonnia was the heart of her many circles of friends. Whether it was keeping in touch with family, lifetime friends, former coworkers, or longtime neighbors, she was the one who brought people together. She loved hosting potluck dinners, bringing warmth and laughter to every gathering.
An avid gardener, Sonnia’s love for flowers earned her the House Beautification Award from the City of Dearborn. She also enjoyed swimming in the summer, touring historical churches, and searching for hidden treasures at garage sales.
Sonnia’s kindness, enthusiasm for life, and unwavering dedication to those she loved will be remembered always.
A Funeral Mass will take place at 11:00 am on Tuesday, September 9, 2025, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, 22430 Michigan Avenue, Dearborn, Michigan 48124. Sonnia’s family will receive visitors on Monday, September 8, 2025, at the Harry J. Will Funeral Home, 37000 Six Mile Road, Livonia, Michigan 48152, from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm, with a Rosary and Memory Sharing Service beginning at 7:00 pm. Visitation will continue at Church on Tuesday from 10:30 am until the time of Mass at 11:00 am. In accordance with Sonnia’s wishes, cremation will follow. Those desiring may consider donations in Sonnia's memory to the Alzheimer's Association.
