

Viola Mae Patterson, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend passed away peacefully on February 1, 2025, in Royal Oak, Michigan, at the age of 82. She was a resident of Kalkaska, Michigan, and formerly lived in Dearborn, Michigan.
Born on October 6, 1942, in Detroit, Michigan, to George and Elizabeth (Fraser) Smith, Viola touched the lives of many with her kindness, generosity, and unwavering love for her family. She was a woman of deep faith and a passionate member of her community.
Viola is survived by her devoted husband of 63 years, Rodger Patterson. They met at West Chicago Baptist Church in 1960 and were married on November 24, 1962, beginning a beautiful journey together that lasted more than six decades. She is also survived by her two children, Heather (Cliff) Urbanek and Greg (Jenna) Patterson, as well as her seven grandchildren: Tyler Patterson, Seth (Jenny) Urbanek, Ian Urbanek, Bethany Urbanek, Jacob Patterson, Collin Patterson, and Nathan Patterson. Viola was also deeply cherished by her sister, Thelma (Bill) Godfrey.
Viola was preceded in death by her parents, George and Elizabeth Smith, and her beloved son, Todd Patterson.
Viola’s passions were as vibrant as her personality. She found joy in many hobbies, including knitting, crocheting, and playing the piano. As an active member of Cornerstone Community Bible Church in Kalkaska, she played the piano for her church family. She also cherished her travel experiences, with fond memories of trips to Australia, Germany, Paris, and other parts of Europe, which she always looked back on with a sense of adventure and gratitude.
A lifelong animal lover, Viola was known for always having a dog by her side, especially her beloved Pookie, Ginger, Chelsea, Patches and Mindy, along with her cherished cat, Casey. She had an unshakeable bond with her pets, and they brought her comfort and companionship throughout her life.
Viola’s volunteer work was another area where she made a lasting impact. She was a dedicated foster mother for many years, and cherished the relationships she made over the years with the children she was introduced to. She served as a tour guide at Greenfield Village for 15 years, sharing her love of history and education with all who came through its doors. She also worked as a travel agent in the mid-1980s, enjoying the chance to help others experience the world she loved so much.
In her earlier years, Viola and Rodger lived in Dearborn, Michigan, where he worked at Ford Motor Company. After Rodger’s retirement, they moved to Kalkaska, where they continued to enjoy their lives together as “snowbirds,” spending winters in Florida.
Viola will be remembered for her deep love for her family, her generous spirit, and the joy she brought to those around her. She lived a life full of purpose, bringing warmth and joy to all who knew her.
A Funeral Service will take place at 11:00 am on Friday, February 7, 2025, at Ward Church, 40000 Six Mile Road, Northville, Michigan 48168. Viola’s family will receive visitors from 3:00 pm until 8:00 pm on Thursday, February 6, 2025, at the Harry J. Will Funeral Home, 37000 Six Mile Road, Livonia, Michigan 48152, and again at Church on Friday from 10:00 am until the time of the Service at 11:00 am. A burial will follow at Acacia Park Cemetery in Beverly Hills, Michigan. In lieu of flowers, those desiring may consider contributions in Viola's memory to the Michigan Humane Society.
