Evelyn Young passed away peacefully at Kensington Village Retirement Home in London on August 16, 2023 after 98 wonderful years. Evelyn is now reunited with beloved husband George (2002) and son Michael (1974). She is predeceased by her parents George and Carrie Stoskopf, brothers Walter, Harold and Austin and sister Margaret.
Her spirit lives strong in her children Mary (David Beaver) and Richard (Carol), her grandchildren Lucas (Jerian) and Carrie Beaver (Brandon), Matthew (Stephen) and Erin Young (Hayden), and great grandchildren Ian Esquimaux and Wesley Beaver.
Born on Dec.26, 1924, Evelyn grew up on the Stoskopf family farm in Mitchell, Ontario, and became a hard working, resourceful and independent woman. Whether it be helping with the harvest, tending to the livestock, or preserving food grown/raised on the farm, she was always ready to do what needed to be done.
But farming was not enough to quench her thirsty mind. Realizing the ambition of his daughter, father George traveled to Montreal to take ownership of some sweet wheels. It must have been quite a sight to see Evelyn confidently piloting the Mini-Austin to high school in Stratford every day.
As an intelligent, compassionate, and caring woman, she graduated from the University of Western Ontario with a nursing degree. A short career in the VON ended when she and George started their family in London.
Evelyn was an active member of the East London community. She volunteered at the schools and was a devoted member of St. Mark’s Anglican Church. When election time came, Evelyn enthusiastically helped with the administration of democracy, going door-to-door registering voters and being right in the middle of polling station action on election day. In her spare time, she enjoyed knitting and quilting projects for family and friends.
To stay sharp, Evelyn knew the importance of mental and physical exercise. Her morning routine included solving the newspaper’s daily Jumble Word and crossword. Many walks in Kiwanis Park near her home on Graydon Street kept her fit.
She was always game for cards or Scrabble and she was a lifelong dedicated bridge player. You had to be alert to match her quick mind and competitive fire. To quote one of her regular bridge opponents, “You cannot imagine the dread we felt when we knew it was our turn to face the tiny terror.”.
After George passed and a fall at the family home, Evelyn moved to Kensington Village. Her family thanks the Kensington staff and many residents for providing her companionship, love and care through those 6 years. A special thank you to Dr. Dan Leger for providing such compassionate care in her final days.
After a private family grave side ceremony, a celebration of Evelyn’s life for all will be held on Monday, August 28, 2023 from 3:00 to 5:00 pm at St. Mark’s Anglican Church, 1320 Wilton Ave, London.
A donation to the Canadian Cancer Society or the London Health Sciences Foundation would honour Evelyn’s memory.
Arrangements are entrusted to Needham Funeral Home, London. Visit https://www.dignitymemorial.com/en-ca/obituaries/london-on/evelyn-young-11411428 to share your memories of Evelyn.
