Marilyn faced many challenges in her life, and by them was never daunted. She met the world on her terms with resolve, confident in her ability to overcome whatever life presented her with. As she often said, she “Rides Chaos”.
She was a prodigious writer, with her newsletter “Marilyn’s Musings”, reminiscences, books, and of course, as all her friends can attest, enumerable emails. She was a true wordsmith, in total command of the language. She enjoyed daily cryptics, plus all manner of word games. She valued precision in language, and the playful side of her had a penchant for spelling and saying words backwards. Many times she would sign off a note with “Nyliram”.
Marilyn leaves behind a daughter Jessie Sutherland; Jessie’s daughter Justine; sons Alexander and John; mother Shirley; and 5 siblings: Geoff (Penny); Susan McLeod (Malcolm); Chris (Grieg); David; and Lisa Munt (Patrick) along with many nieces and nephews. Her father Alan (1920-1993) continued to be a divine source of inspiration and validation throughout her entire life.
Cremation has taken place. The family thanks the very remarkable and compassionate staff in the COVID intensive care ward at the LHSC. Truly brave and wonderful folk.
Marilyn easily formed deep and lasting friendships, and in her eclectic fashion, her friends were from various unrelated circles. Please share the news of what Marilyn would have called her “Birth Day” with those in your shared circle.
Unfortunately, pandemic restrictions prevent the send-off Marilyn would have chosen. She loved her words, and she loved her stories and she loved to hold court- so please honour her memory and spread the joy by sharing your Marilyn story on this page. Just click 'add memory'. There is currently no end date for accepting posts. If anybody wants to contact the family directly, please email [email protected]. (A palindrome just for you Marilyn!)
