Betty was born at her parents’ home in Henry County Indiana on January 27, 1931. She was sixth of 11 children born to John and Mattie Poindexter. Her father served as a sergeant in the Army during World War I and her mother was a homemaker. All seven of her brothers served in the military.
Growing up, Betty attended the Friends Church in Dublin, Indiana. She was saved in 1947 and met and married her husband of over 70 years, Roy, and they had eight children—five sons and three daughters.
Betty worked at the RCA factory in Indianapolis as a spot welder on grids for radios. Roy was in the Navy and he and Betty moved to Alameda, California, in 1954 with their three eldest children. They were blessed with twins during their time there and eventually moved to Long Beach where they had another daughter and two more sons. They were together there until 2017 when Roy went to join the Lord. She moved to Phoenix in 2021 to live with her son, David, and be near her daughter, Phyllis, until the Lord called her home.
Church was always a big part of Betty’s life. She taught Sunday School, served as president of the Missionary Society and as Church Secretary.
She also taught at a Christian preschool and even worked at Dooley’s, a hardware store in Long Beach, until the store closed.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy, her eldest child, Mary, and is survived by sons Roy Dean Jr. (Sue), Ray Duane (Patsy), Philip (Sherri), David, and Daniel (Michelle) and daughters, Phyllis and Susan (Ed), and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
