Jim (known as Jimmy to some friends) was born in Elgin, Illinois to Elmer and Jean Fairchild. He was raised with sisters Nan and Linda. After graduating high school Jimmy joined the marines. Jim moved to California after his discharge from the Marines. In 1964 Jim married Beverly Korostoff and adopted Michael and Joseph. In 1965 son John Scott was born followed in 1969 by daughter Rachel Ann. Jim studied Engineering and English Literature and owned a manufacturing company.
In 1978 Jim married Karen O'Toole and continued to live and work in Southern California. After retirement Jim finished his Bachelor's degree in English and became a novelist. At the time of his departure he was working on a second novel.
Throughout his life, Jim had a passion for nautical life. In his youth he was always swimming and enjoying the water. As an adult he owned boats and was even building a boat in his garage. In the last 15 years of his life he lived on boat. He said he slept like a baby because waves rocked him to sleep.
Jim is survived by sisters, Nan Fairchild Lighter and Linda Fairchild Colombi. James will be greatly missed by his four children Michael, Joseph, John and Rachel and his five grandchildren, Thomas, Ashlyn, Sydney, Caroline and Scott as well his dear friends.
