1921-2014
Kay Robertson, age 92, went home to the Lord on September 17, 2014 with her family by her side. Born Katherine Marinetti on December 19, 1921 in Providence, Rhode Island, Kay fondly remembered her rural childhood raising chickens and shucking fresh clams.
At age 26 while on vacation in California, Kay met the man of her dreams, William Robertson. She had walked into Robbie's Hobby Center in Cudahy to have her photographs developed and was introduced to Robbie's brother, Bill. She extended her vacation to spend time with Bill and they were soon married. The two had a long, loving and dedicated marriage of 56 years, until Bill passed in 2004. Together they raised three children, Karann (Milligan), William, and Barbara.
Kay had a passion for gardening, especially roses, fresh lettuce, cilantro, and concord grapes. Her favorite flowers were pink carnations. She particularly loved good food, never passing up a rack of lamb or ribs; she took pride in showing her grandchildren how to properly clean a bone. Kay was a prolific baker. Her cinnamon-raisin bread was a local favorite, which she regularly sold at St. Dominic Church to raise money for charity. She was the wedding cake baker for family and friends, renowned for her elaborate creations. She also loved to make fresh pies with her grandchildren, her specialties being apple and berry.
Kay was blessed with a long life that allowed her to enjoy watching six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren grow. She also deeply valued her personal friendships and neighbors, regularly praying for them and keeping up with their lives. Kay was very dedicated to her Catholic faith, passionately studying the Bible in fellowship throughout her life. She was actively involved in the Marriage Encounter and Cursillo Christian Renewal Movement. She will join her husband Bill at their final resting place in Old Downey Cemetery in Downey. Viewing from 6-9 pm and rosary at 7 pm on Tuesday, September 23rd at St. Dominic Savio Church in Bellflower. The funeral is Wednesday, September 24th at 10 am at St. Dominic, with a reception to follow at Thompson Park. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Alzheimer's Association at www.alz.org or 1-800-272-3900.
