March 13, 1949 – January 25, 2011
Kathy passed into God’s loving arms. She will be missed by all-especially her husband of 33 years, William “Bill” Newton, her mother, Joline E Smith, her aunt, Patricia Silvius and her brother-in-law, Dan (Gracie)Newton.
The chain has been broken, her fight is our strength… brothers, James(Margaret)Dowling, Joseph(Kathleen)Dowling, her sisters, Mary (Rick)Powers, Susan(Curt)Webber, Dorothy(Raymond)Lancy, Peggy(Jeff)Cloherty, Theresa(C Wes)Moore, Barbara(James)Lewis and Carol(Byron)Esler. Aunt Kathy leaves behind fond memories for her many nieces and nephews. Although Kathy had no children of her own, she just wanted to be the best Aunt Kathy – not only to her sibling’s children – but to her friend’s children as well.
Kathy was born in the San Diego area and grew up in Rialto,CA. She attended St Catherine’s Elementary and graduated from St Bernardine’s High School in San Bernardino. After a few years in college, she then enlisted in the US Marine Corp., attended Officers Training and achieved the rank of First Lieutenant.
Maybe it was her military service or maybe just being the eldest of ten children – Kathy was in charge! Her robust “HELLO”, her Bunco nights out, her resounding hymns of prayer – you knew when Kathy was in the room!
Kathy and Bill enjoyed their adventures of travel - a visit to Ireland – taking Grandma Dorothy on their cruise to Alaska, trips to Washington – or just relaxing with friends or family for a backyard party!
Service to her country from 1968 – 1973 – Service to others through Soroptimist and community organizations – Service to her faith – Kathy was a leader/our leader forever!
Kathy will surely be missed by her co-workers, her neighbors, and most especially her family. What consoles us now is the knowledge that she is surrounded by angels in God’s heavenly embrace without the pain of her illness able to enjoy the same love she so generously gave and showed to the world through her life.
An Irish Blessing: May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back, May the sun shine warm upon your face, And the rains fall soft upon your fields, And, until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of his hand.
In lieu of flowers, you may make a donation to SPCA LA in Kathy’s honor. The website is http://spcala.com/donate/donorinfo.php . After all, Kathy loved her four legged children, Sparky, Sweetie and Buddy and they will be missing their Kathy too.
