Norman Clarke Brady Sr., 92, husband, father, mentor, “Old School” Baseball star, Space Program executive, passed on Friday August 31, 2012, at peace, at home, surrounded by his loved ones. Born in Baltimore, Maryland, he was the surviving member of his family, preceded by his parents Ada and John Brady, brothers, Edwin, John, and David and sister Sister Mary Benedict RSM.
He was a graduate of Loyola High School and College and was inducted into their athletic Hall of Fame in 1997. He was also a member of the Maryland Old Timers Baseball Hall of Fame. Norman Clarke Brady Sr served honorably in the US Navy as a specialist Second Class during World War II. He caught for the Martin Bomber National Industrial League champions who went 34-1 in 1948. Mr. Brady was employed at the Glenn L. Martin company in Baltimore, MD, for 26 years, until his move with his family to Los Alamitos, California, in 1967.
While employed at North American Rockwell in Seal Beach, CA, he was a Senior Executive during the “American Mission to Space” program, including the Gemini and other space shuttle programs. Mr. Brady was responsible for the fabrication and assembly of the missions to launch the First Man in Space, the First Space Walk, and the Mission to the Moon, with Neil Armstrong. He retired in 1982.
During his retirement years, he became National Director of Operations for Pony Baseball. During his tenure he increased the number of teams in Southern CA from 87 to over 400.
He is survived by his loving wife of 70 years, Mary Ellen, and his eleven children: Norman Jr; Kathleen; Joseph; Margaret; Mary Frances; Patricia; Teresa; Charles; David; James; and Timothy.
A viewing and rosary service will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church 13900 Church Place, Seal Beach, CA. 90740 - (562) 430-8170 on Friday September 7, 2012 @ 7:00 pm. A Funeral Liturgy Mass will be held at Holy Family Catholic Church 13900 Church Place, Seal Beach, CA. 90740 - (562) 430-8170 on Saturday September 8, 2012, @ 10:30 am. Interment will be at All Souls Cemetery - 4400 Cherry Avenue, Long Beach, CA 90807 (562) 353-4986 following the Funeral Liturgy Mass.
