Steven John Lucas was born on January 6, 1960, in Long Beach, California. Although he traveled and saw many wonderful places, he always returned to Long Beach to remain close to his family and friends. He passed away on March 29, 2026, having spent all 66 of his years in the city he called home.
Steven attended Fremont Elementary School, Jefferson Jr. High School, Wilson High School, and Long Beach City College. He was in elementary school when he learned to play the trumpet, and he continued through his senior year at Wilson, participating in both the marching band and the jazz band.
Steven’s cultural interests included theatrical productions such as Phantom of the Opera, Cats, Wicked, and Man of La Mancha. He enjoyed going to the movies and often dining on sushi afterward with friends. He was a voracious reader and loved discussing the many titles he enjoyed.
Steven found great pleasure in camping with friends at places like Twin Lakes in the Sierra Nevada mountains, as well as riding dirt bikes in the Gorman area and other desert-like locations. He also enjoyed attending the Renaissance Pleasure Faire and sharing those adventures with family and friends. He often met friends at Joe Jost’s to play billiards or simply relax in their company.
Steven was known for his fascination with Halloween, often creating an elaborate Halloween maze for kids and adults alike to enjoy. His home featured many pictures similar to the 3D portraits in Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion that seem to “follow” you, changing from the appearance of an ordinary person into a ghostly apparition. These were always among the maze’s favorite features.
Steven had a deep love for animals and cared for many pets over the years, including dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rats, mice, chinchillas, snakes, lizards, birds, and other assorted animals. He was overjoyed when the Aquarium of the Pacific opened and held a season pass for several years.
Having grown up with his father, John Lucas, active in the Masonic fraternity, Steven eagerly awaited his 21st birthday so that he, too, could join the organization. Over the years, he was actively involved with the lodge and its affiliate groups. He enjoyed cooking meals for many meetings and other functions, and he also devoted time to the fraternal youth organizations DeMolay, Job’s Daughters, and the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls.
Steven had a unique sense of humor and enjoyed making his family and friends happy by sharing jokes and funny stories. His infectious smile and humor will be remembered.
Steven is survived by his sister, Joan Nead; brother-in-law, Duane Nead; sister-in-law, Karla Lucas; four nieces; three nephews; great-nieces and great-nephews; as well as his many friends.
