Tomasita was born on September 22, 1932 in Mayaguez Puerto Rico to Adolfo Tirado and Josefa Perez. She came to New York as a young lady, the first in her family which included 7 other siblings. Within 3 months of her arrival, she met the love of her life Luis “Waldy” Edwardo Cruz. She set her sight on him and vowed to become his wife. Several months later, they shared the fairy tale wedding that would set the stage for 52 years of peace and harmony, together. Not only was she the matriarch in her family but also a true leader and organizer who fought for the little guy and always won.
Tomasita was known for her no-nonsense commentary. If she thought it, she would say it and that was one of her greatest qualities. In every space and every place she occupied, she would be in total control of the situation and those around her. Often introducing herself as “Jennifer Lopez”, her comical and sweet personality brought a smile to every stranger she met. Her greatest loves, her grandchildren, filled her life and along the way she would collect lifelong friends who would become more like family.
Tomasita is survived by her sons Luis and Adolfo, her goddaughter Emy, her siblings Moserate “Taty” Vega and Mireya “Yeyi” Latorre. She leaves seven grandchildren Steven, Michael, Jayson, Andrew, Julio, Rosa, Carlos and Philip, nine great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and countless loving family and friends.
Albert Schweitzer said - “Example is not the main thing in influencing others. It is the only thing.”
Tomasita led by example and not only influenced but inspired us to be leaders in our own right….
