Dean Clarence Broughton, 99, of Longview, TX, formerly of the Houston, TX area, passed away peacefully November 29, 2018 in Longview. He was born November 8, 1919 in Normal, Illinois to Amy Alice Miller Broughton and Clarence Harold Broughton. Dean had two siblings, George and Helen who preceded him in death.
Dean, president of Broughton Engineering, Inc., until his retirement four years ago at the age of 95, brought to the job hands-on experience in Quality Systems, Product Engineering, and Manufacturing, as well as experience at the management level in these areas.
He was formerly Manager of Technical Services, Oil Tool Division, Cameron Iron Works. His management responsibility included Quality, Metallurgy, Elastomer R&D, Elastomer Production, Experimental Engineering, Prototype Parts Manufacturing and Standards Engineering.
Broughton also served as Vice President of Operations and member of the Board of Directors of Texas Aluminum Co., Inc. He directed operations of seven divisions with over 1200 employees.
He served A.O. Smith Corporation, Automotive Division, as Product Engineering Manager, Plant Manager, Manager of Information Systems Development, and Manager of Acquisitions Studies.
Broughton has attended the Phillip Crosby Quality College. He has also had training under Dr. W. Edwards Deming on Quality and Productivity. He participated in the implementation of the Quality Improvement Process at Cameron. He directed the installation of the Scanlon Plan, a participative management system, at Texas Aluminum.
With fourteen years as an educator and consultant, Broughton has taught at the University of Illinois, Syracuse University, and Marquette University.
Broughton has a M.S. Degree in Theoretical & Applied Mechanics and a B.S. Degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Illinois. He is a registered professional engineer in Texas, Illinois, and Wisconsin.
He serves as a Director of the Association of Well Head Equipment Manufacturers. He is active on several American Petroleum Institute committees. He is also active in the ANSI/ASME SPPE program, serving on several committees.
While Dean enjoyed academic and professional achievement, his heart was always with his wife of 66 years, Helen Fern Briscoe Broughton, who preceded him in death in 2014. He is survived by his three children: Timothy Broughton and his wife Tawnya, Katherine, Carol, their children and grandchildren, and his several nieces and nephews. Dean was one of those husbands and fathers who had many interests including home remodels, gardening, auto mechanics, music, road trips, games, computers and general fun. He was warm and personable, had a great sense of humor and was a very kind neighbor and friend.
He will be dearly missed, but we can celebrate in our strong belief that he is now dancing once again with the girl he met and fell in love with at their college dance. His family also celebrates the great gift they were given that their father, uncle, grandfather, and great grandfather lived to be 99 years old.
A celebration of his life will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, December 7, 2018 at the Chapel of Lakeview Funeral Home, 5000 West Harrison Road, Longview, TX with Charles Barham officiating.
