George W. Lee, age 85, of Longview passed away surrounded by his family on March 1, 2018. He was born to Robert and Lera Hand Lee August 26, 1932 in Corsicana, TX. George attended Corsicana schools until graduation in May 1950. He attended Navarro Jr. College 1950-1951. He also attend Texas A & M for a short time. He joined the National Guard in 1949 and was honorably discharge 1960, with more than 10 years of service. George and Janet Blizzard, of Shreveport, married August 2, 1952 and shortly after moved to Longview where he worked for United Gas. He later went to work for Texas Eastman in 1965 and worked there as an operator, mechanical draftsman and electrician until his retirement in October, 1993.
His first love was his Ham Radio. He talked all over the US and many foreign countries. He received USACA Awards for running 3077 counties in the US, multiple times. He and Janet traveled all most every state in the US for Ham Radio conventions and county hunting. His long time membership in the Mobile Radio Amateur Club was from 1968 to present. He was also a part of the Emergency Contact Group in the event of a disaster, before cell phones.
George is preceded in death by his parents, brothers Hughland Lee, Denmond Lee and Bob Lee.
Left behind to cherish George’s memory is his son George (wife Julie) Lee of Georgetown, son Greg of Ft. Worth, daughter Jan Lee (husband Mike) McClain of Longview. Grandchildren Erin Lee (husband Colin) Cook of Austin, Jordan (wife Lena) Lee of Dallas, Adam McClain of Longview, Lauren McClain (husband Robbie) Owens of Longview. George also had 7 great grandchildren, Ryan McClain, Harrison and Madeline Cook, Rocky and Pearl Lee, Hazel and Hattie Owens and several nephews and a niece.
Pallbearers are Nick Cropper, his longtime friend. George Hill who he had coffee with at McDonald’s every day, grandsons Adam McClain and Jordan Lee, grandsons –in-law Colin Cook and Robbie Owens.
George became a member of the York Rite of Freemasonry Masons in May, 1964. In lieu of flowers, please consider a memorial gift to Shriners Hospitals for Children, his favorite charity.
