Melvin “Sonny” Myers, age 82, passed away on Sunday, December 6, 2020 at his home surrounded by family in Longview, TX. He was born the son of Mabel and Bud Myers in Philadelphia, MS. He grew up in Waldo community. Sonny was the baby of the family. He had 1 brother and 3 sisters – Herman, Mildred, Verbie, and Nana Bell. He graduated from Zephyr Hill in Philadelphia, MS. He married an incredible loving and giving woman named Bobbie Ruth Butler on October 30, 1958. They raised 6 children – Kevin, Mike, Melvya, Stacy, Sidney and Gavin. They were married 62 years.
Sonny worked most his life in the cable television industry for about 60 years starting in Magnolia, Arkansas. Sonny was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Elberton, GA. The family moved to Longview in 1972. For about 6 years, Sonny and Bobbie became a foster family for many, many children.
Sonny had a passion for woodworking and making things himself. Over the years, he has made many amazing things such as wooden truck banks, replica paddle wheel boat, furniture, mandolins and many other incredible items. He wasn’t limited to woodworking either. He built a camper from the frame up as well as building a teardrop camper.
He was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Longview and a previous member of Greggton First Baptist Church in Longview. Sonny loved to share his love of Jesus to everyone – even witnessing to people he met in Wal-Mart. He very much enjoyed his Sunday school class and attending church services.
Sonny was such a loving, caring and generous husband, father and friend to all. He was always there to support his family and friends but also there for others in need. He had so many people that loved and respected him dearly. Sonny was always willing to share his knowledge of woodworking and building skills with his family and friends. The best part about our Dad was that he never met a stranger. He enjoyed talking to everyone that he came into contact with. We know that he is up in Heaven getting to know everyone up there.
Sonny was preceded in death by his father Bud, his mother Mabel, his brother Herman, his sisters Mildred and Nana Bell. He is survived by his wife Bobbie, his six children Kevin, Mike, Melvya, Stacy, Sidney and Gavin, his sister Verbie, his grandkids Courtney, Brittany, Christian, Traven, Tayna, Justin, Morgan, McKenzie, Ryne, Logan, Brody and his great-grandkids Cameron, Rory, Nila, Teagan and Calli.
Special thanks to the great staff of One-Point Hospice for taking such great care of our loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather! They were very caring and helpful during this difficult time.
