

.Reggie Gilbert, 88, peacefully went to be with the Lord, on July 11, 2017 at his home, in Longview, TX. His devotion to his family and his firm belief in God supported him in his struggles and ultimately gave him peace.
Reggie was born to the late M.W. and Ruth Gilbert of Edgewood, TX on December 17, 1928. He graduated from Edgewood High School where he was a football star. He continued playing football and his education at East Texas State University where he received his BS in Education. Reggie married Anne Slaughter of Edgewood, Texas on July 18, 1953. He served in the Army for 2 years, spending one of those years in Korea. Reggie loved working with his hands and built several beautiful pieces of furniture. He also enjoyed the creativity of working wood with a lathe, and he created numerous bowls and vases which he generously gave to friends and family to enjoy.
Reggie had a fantastic sense of humor and loved to make his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren laugh. Reggie and Anne enjoyed traveling and took many memorable vacations when they were young, as well as trips with their children and spouses later in life.
Reggie will be dearly missed by his loved ones, however they are comforted with the knowledge that Reggie is at peace, in the loving arms of Jesus. He is survived by his bride of nearly 64 years Anne Gilbert, of Longview, TX; his brother, Jack Gilbert of Edgewood, TX; his daughter and son-in-law Ruth and Richard Swimm, of Boerne, TX; his son and daughter-in-law Paul and Nanci Gilbert of Groesbeck, TX; five grandchildren, Matt Gilbert and his wife Rachael of Flower Mound, TX; Sarah Swimm and Catie Swimm of Denver, Co; Rachel Swimm Schuhow of Mt. Vernon, WA., and Megan and her husband Russell Henderson of Oklahoma City, OK. Reggie is survived by 6 great grandchildren: Elizabeth, Olivia, and Ezekiel Gilbert of Flower Mound, TX; Gabriel and Liliana Henderson of Oklahoma City, OK; and Lois Anne Schuhow of Mt. Vernon, WA; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Reggie is preceded in death by his parents M.W. and Ruth Gilbert; his brothers Hubert and Gordon Gilbert, his sister Estalee Gilbert Avery and grandson-in-law Brandon Schuhow.
Reggie was a foreman for Sun Oil Company and retired in 1986. He was an active and dedicated Member of First Baptist Church, Longview for over 20 years. A celebration of life service will be held at Lakeview Funeral Home at 2:00 p.m., Friday, July 14, 2017 officiated by Kip Salser. Interment will follow in Lakeview Memorial Gardens. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., Friday, before the service. In lieu of the usual floral remembrances, contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association 911 Loop 281 Longview, Texas 75604.
