"I graduated from Stephen F. Austin, and my first coaching job was in Texarkana.
I coached in Texarkana for 21 years, and then moved to Kilgore where I met my wife, Tucy.
Then I spent two years at James Bowie High School in Simms, Texas. From there we moved to Pine Tree High School in Longview. I retired there in 2004 and was rehired at Beckville High School in Beckville, Texas. I retired again in 2008, and this time for good. I haven't had time to miss it.
Tucy and I travel quite a bit. We have been to the Northwest (Washington and Canada), the Northeast (Maine, Vermont, Massachusetts, and Nova Scotia), the Southeast (Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and everywhere in between. We've been on numerous cruises (Caribbean mostly). We have made trips to Hawaii, the Rocky Mountains, and last spring we took my sister Beth Ann and her husband on a two week trip to New Mexico, Arizona, and the Grand Canyon. Our next biggie will be in September when we take a two-week trip to Alaska.
The diving picture was taken in Paamul, Mexico, on one of our cruises. This was my first and possibly my last. The person in the picture with me is my cousin John, who owns the dive shop there. This is quite an experience.
When Tucy and I go on trips, we always take our boots and jeans and search for good dance halls. We usually find at least one, sometimes more. We have danced from Maine to Colorado to the Hill Country to Arizona to New Orleans to Nashville and all places in between.
Tucy and I also like to play golf, and we have in almost as many places. From Hilton Head, S.C. to Florida to Colorado to New Mexico to Maine to Louisiana to Alabama to Arkansas and all over Texas.
Before I retired, I built a 30x40-foot shop and dance hall behind our house, and in it there's about a 20x30-foot wooden dance floor. Tucy and I teach dancing one night a week and go out with our friends a couple nights dancing.
That's about all we do. Dance, golf and travel, and occasionally we go fishing. Retirement is good."
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Rodney's name to the Cherokee Country Golf Association - NI-33 Lake Cherokee, Longview, TX 75603 (903)643-3571
