Florence was a good friend and I still miss seeing her in my hallway. She was my neighbor and a sweet presence.
She was always leaving for a function or coming back from a lunch carrying a doggie bag.
I really miss going out with her for dinner. She had a lot of spunk!

When I came to occidental for an interview in 1986 with Florence the thing she asked me was can I spell of course I said yes Florence then asked if I would work 2 weeks on a trial basis to see how things went and I said yes she was a great lady and I will miss her Sharon Derman

My name is Lynda Aldon and I have been a neighbor of Florence's for over 20 years.
I remember going over to her place with my mother for tea and listening to the two of them discuss politics, art and history like two former school friends.
I went out frequently with Florence for dinner and even spent Mother's Day with her the first year my mother had passed 
She kept me amused with her wit and comforted by her generous heart 
I will miss her dearly

I had the wonderful honor of getting to know Florence  when I worked at Stop Cancer.  Having the opportunity to see her in her element on a daily basis was such a privilege - not only did she drive herself (in her late 90s into her 100s) to the office every day for a full 8 hours, but she came dressed to the nines- never mind that it was a small, quiet office with narry a visitor.  When she wasn't flooring me with her dedication to her work and her remarkable knowledge of so many things, she was stunning me with her gorgeous ensembles, jewelry, hats (and sometimes gloves!).  Most of all, I adored her youthful giggle , wondrous spirit and sense of humor (and that she always shared her french fries with me).  We were about the same size and totally agreed that the best things come in small packages.  I often told my friends about my incredible co-worker and friend, and although they never met her, they were as in awe of her as I was.  She had more energy than most people half, or even three quarters her age.  When I called her to wish her a happy 105th birthday, she politely hurried through the conversation, as her day was "jammed with activity."  I think we all want to be Florence when we grow up!

Dearest Florence! Your earthly body is gone but your spirit and your energy live on! We bonded early on in our meeting and had a special feeling for each other. And guess what!! I did my DNA and learned I was 10% Armenian! It's no  wonder!! The angels are in for a treat with you joining them in the Heavens! I wish you as wonderful an after life as you had here on Earth! My ashes will also go to the same cemetery to join my brother so I'll be sure to give you a wave when I visit and afterward a hug when I join you!! Much love, Francesca! 💕💕

I first met Florence in the mid-1980s, when I attended a meeting with Armand Hammer to discuss cutting edge cancer research.  At the time, Florence was Dr. Hammer’s Executive Assistant.  We had an instant rapport.  She radiated wisdom, kindness and enthusiasm with a knowing smile and a twinkle in her eye.  Over the next 35 years, Florence and I became dear friends, as well as associates at STOP CANCER, the organization which a core group of us founded to raise funds in support of young cancer investigators.  Florence was an integral part of STOP CANCER’s success from the beginning.  Her warmth and incredible focus helped attract hundreds of individuals to our enterprise, and she was charmingly relentless in asking potential donors to support our cause.  Between 1988 – 2018, STOP CANCER raised and distributed over $80 million dollars to fund young researchers at UCLA Jonsson, USC Norris, and City of Hope.  In short, Florence was a force of nature.  She left an indelible impression on everyone who had the pleasure of meeting her.  The world will be dimmer without Florence’s keen intellect, radiant smile, and beautiful hats.  But we were blessed beyond measure to have her with us for over 10 decades.  It was a privilege and an honor to be Florence’s friend.  She will remain in my heart forever.

Besides being one of the brightest people we know Florence was also a very caring person.  She was invaluable to Stop Cancer and especially to us when we were Presidents of the organization.  You will be greatly missed.
