It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Allen Eugene “Gene” Byrum. Gene, a cherished father, grandfather, and brother, left us on the 30th of July, 2024, in Louisville, Kentucky. Born on October 27, 1937, in Laconia, Indiana, his life's journey was marked by devotion to his family, service to his country, and unwavering dedication to his trade.
Gene was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Delonna June Byrum; his son, Michael Allen Byrum; his parents, John Edward and Lou Jacie Byrum; his brother, William Edward Byrum; and his sisters, Helen Kohler and Laura Evelyn Ferris. Though they depart the Earth ahead of him, their influence shaped Gene's life in irreplaceable and profound ways.
He leaves behind a legacy of love and memorable moments, shouldered by his surviving family members. His brother, Phillip Leon Byrum, with his wife Debbie, and his sister, Alice Faye Scholl, together with her husband Art, will carry the stories of Gene's life forward. His son, David Lee Byrum, with his wife Barbara, and daughter-in-law, Sheri Diane Byrum, will hold dear the values Gene instilled in them. His spirit lives on through his grandchildren Bradley Byrum (Christy), Matt Byrum, Justin Byrum (Lesli), and Dr. Amber Byrum Simmons (Evan), and his great-grandchildren, Caroline, Emma, Luke, Brynn, Mackenzie, Alex, and Lily. Gene also leaves behind his special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Lewis "Sonny" and Gwen Thacker, along with a host of beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Gene proudly served his country as a member of the National Guard, building a foundation of discipline and commitment that would define his civilian life. His work as a senior supervisor of line records at LG&E, which spanned over 38 years, earned him the respect and admiration of his colleagues. Gene was not just a man of work; he was of his community, fostering deep and lasting relationships with those who were privileged to know him.
Away from the responsibilities of work and family, Gene found joy and relaxation at the poker tables with his dear friends at the Aero Club of Louisville at Bowman Field. He had a knack for playing the cards but, more importantly, for building friendships that extended beyond the games. It was in these quiet moments of laughter and camaraderie that Gene's humor, kindness, and warmth were most palpable.
Above all, Gene cherished his family. They were the cornerstone of his life, the recipients of his deepest love, and his most significant pride. Every moment spent with them was a treasure, each milestone a cherished memory. Gene lived his life as a testament to the enduring strength of familial bonds, modeling a legacy of love and dedication for generations to come.
Gene's life journey was not just a passage of time but a tapestry of experiences that wove together a narrative of resilience, generosity, and affection. His Story is not one of an ending, but a continuous legacy through the lives he touched, the work he accomplished, and the love he shared.
Gene Byrum’s memory will be revered and his life celebrated by all those he has left behind. He walked this Earth with humility, loved with intensity, and departed with dignity. As we bid farewell to Gene, let us take comfort in the knowledge that his life was well-lived and his family well-loved. His journey continues in the stories we share, the lessons he taught us, and the love that will never wane.
The family would like to give many thanks to Hosparus Health of Louisville for their support and loving care. More so for his hospice team and his nurse April.
A visitation will be held at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven Funeral Home 4400 Bardstown Road Louisville, Kentucky 40218 on Wednesday August 7, 2024 from 11AM to 2PM. A funeral service will immediately follow in the funeral home chapel. Gene will be laid to rest at Resthaven Memorial Park.
