Arthur Dale Hopkins, beloved father, grandfather, and friend, passed away on June 26, 2025, at the age of 76 in Woburn, Massachusetts. Born June 20, 1949, in Louisville, Kentucky, Arthur was the cherished and devoted son of David Alexander Hopkins and Margery Ethlyn (Cole) Hopkins.
Arthur—known as “Art” to many and as “Dale” to his family—was a proud 1971 graduate of Western Kentucky University, where he majored in History. Art held several jobs, first as a high school teacher, then as a bank clerk, before dedicating the majority of his professional life to the U.S. Postal Service where he worked as a machine clerk in Louisville, Kentucky.
Art was an avid reader who enjoyed watching sports on television and loved movies, both old and new. He also had a lifelong passion for music. As a young man, he played guitar and even wrote his own songs, often reminiscing about the music he had created and played over the years.
Art’s curiosity and love of learning extended to genealogy, history, and science. He was especially proud of his Scottish heritage and was an active, dedicated member of Clan Carmichael in the U.S., serving multiple terms as a director and attending more than twenty Highland Games in Glasgow, Kentucky. After moving to Massachusetts, he finally fulfilled a long-held dream by gaining membership to the Sons of the American Revolution, often proudly noting that he had multiple ancestors who fought in the Revolutionary War. He was a Kentucky Colonel and a member of both the Filson Historical Society and the Frazier History Museum. He was also an elder in the Presbyterian Church.
Art married Mary “Janice” Monahan on November 21, 1975, and they shared 44 wonderful years together until her passing in 2019. After her death, he moved to Massachusetts to be closer to his daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren. There, he became an active presence in their lives, delighting in hearing about their daily activities, discussing football players with his grandsons, and sharing “dad jokes” and personal stories along the way.
Art will be remembered for his gentle heart, warm humor, sharp wit, and unwavering dedication to his family. Art prided himself on his remarkable memory. He took the time to learn everyone’s name and was always careful to use it, a trait that endeared him to his caregivers and acquaintances alike. He found joy in the simple things and made sure everyone around him did too.
He is survived by his loving daughter Brenna Langenau, devoted son-in-law David Langenau, and his adored grandsons Derek and Daniel Langenau. His love for them was unwavering, and he remained a source of encouragement, wisdom, and affection to the very end.
A visitation for Arthur will be held Saturday, July 19, 2025 from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM with a funeral service and burial to follow at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, KY 40218.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Lung Association or the Filson Historical Society.
