Bob Kirby, 77, of Louisville, died peacefully on Sunday, October 29th, surrounded by his family.
As a young man, Bob attended the University of Louisville and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking. During his working life, Bob worked for Citizens Fidelity Bank, then later PNC Bank, where he started in the mailroom and ended as a Vice President and branch manager. After retiring from PNC, he worked for Lowe’s for several years. Bob was also very proud of his service as a field artillery noncommissioned officer in the Kentucky Army National Guard, where he was selected as one of twenty-five men in the country who were named Top Guardsmen in 1968. However, none of these jobs were as important to him as being a loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend.
Bob led by example, living with respect, kindness, love, and a great sense of humor that lit up every room he was in. He enjoyed spending time with his family and was immensely proud of his children and grandchildren. When he wasn’t with family, he spent time with close friends and loved to play golf. Bob was always willing to lend a hand with home projects or any other task asked of him. He loved working with his hands, building furniture, working on cars, and doing yardwork. He approached every day with humility, enthusiasm, and a smile.
Bob’s kindness extended outside of his family. He delighted in service work, volunteering with Habitat For Humanity, Junior Achievement, multiple Rotary Clubs, the Fern Creek Lions Club, the Special Olympics, and was a little league baseball coach among others. Just like his service in the Kentucky Army National Guard, Bob would simply say he was “just doing his share” in helping others and the community.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Mary. He is survived by the love of his life and wife of 57 years, Mary Ray; his daughter, Joy (Mehran); son, Doug; three grandchildren, Mitra, Nadja, and Arya; two sisters, Lita (Carl) and Carolyn; as well as a loving extended family and many close friends.
Bob is fondly remembered by everyone he met. He will be missed. Bob’s funeral will be held on Saturday, November 4th, at 12:00, with visitation from 9:30 to 12:00, at Evergreen Funeral Home on Preston Highway. In lieu of flowers, his family asks you to please consider donations in Bob’s name to St Jude’s Children Research Hospital, Habitat for Humanity, or the J. Graham Brown Cancer Center.
