

Bruce was a native of Louisville, Kentucky. Born in September of 1938, he grew up in West Louisville. Like his late parents, Robert Bruce Rush and the former Matilda Louise Rost, he earned a high school diploma from Theodore Ahrens Trade School in 1956. By 1959, he was inspired to enlist in the United States Army and volunteered for duty in the Far East. He arrived at Military Assistance Advisory Group (MAAG) Headquarters, Vietnam, in March of 1962. By 1968, he was commissioned by the State Department as a Foreign Service Officer (FSO). His overseas assignments continued through 1985, including multiple assignments in Southeast Asia, West Africa, and the Middle East. In 1990, he retired after more than 30 years of dutiful federal and military service.
He retired and relocated to a ranch in the Republic of Namibia, formerly South West Africa. He is survived by his devoted wife of 33 years, Araceli Rush, formerly Maria Araceli Vasquez-Hernandez, and their two sons, Bruce Jr. and Douglas. He was well loved and highly regarded by family, friends, neighbors and colleagues. Those who were close to him knew well of his passion for genealogy, wildlife conservation, and international travel.
Visitation will be held from 3pm to 8pm on the 21st of October at 2428 Frankfort Ave, Louisville, KY 40206. Visitation on the 22nd of October will be held from 12pm to 1pm, with funeral service at 1pm at the same location. His burial will occur at Cave Hill Cemetery, following the service.
