

Cornelius Joseph Cushing, 91, returned to his Heavenly Father on Friday, July 24, 2015 to join his loving wife of 65 years, Betty, who preceded him in death by 28 days. He is also preceded in death by his parents, Cornelius and Bessie Cushing; brother, James Cushing; and sister, Elizabeth Peake. He was born in Bowling Green, KY and moved to Louisville with his family where he attended St. Xavier High School before enrolling at the University of Chicago. He was an Army veteran of WWII, 96th Division, serving as a combat medic making beach landings at Leyte Gulf and Okinawa. He returned from the war and had a long career with L&N Railroad where he enjoyed pitching for the company baseball team.
He is survived by his son, Michael Cushing(Robin); grandchildren, Katie Durbin(Curtis), Paul Cushing(Becka), and Beth Cushing; and great grandchildren, Izzy, Bailey, and Emme.
Funeral service will be 10am Tuesday, July 28, 2015 at Evergreen Funeral Home with interment in Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation will be 2-8pm Monday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the Salvation Army. The family would like to express their gratitude to the staff at Providence Richwood in LaGrange, KY, for their loving care given to Cornelius and his family. He was a generous, charitable person and a devoted father, Papa, and Pepaw who will be greatly missed.
