

Daniel MacKenzie Keppie died in Louisville KY on March 14, 2026. He was born in St. Louis, MO on October 31, 1944 to Daniel MacKenzie Keppie and Evada (Boyle) Keppie. Dan grew up near Milwaukee Wisconsin and received his BS in conservation and biology, Wisconsin State University, 1966; an MS in wildlife ecology and statistics, Oregon State University, 1970, and a PhD in zoology, University of Alberta, 1975.
From there he began a 40-year career as a Professor in the Department of Biology, and the Department of Forest Resources at the University of New Brunswick, Canada. His principal research field was population dynamics in birds.
In 1979 he received the Dr. Allan P. Stuart Memorial for Excellence in Teaching, University of New Brunswick. He co--authored two entries in the Birds of North America encyclopedia featuring the American Woodcock and Band-tailed Pidgeon.
A life-long gardener and environmentalist, he was also an avid hiker and bird watcher. In retirement, Dan volunteered at Bernheim Arboretum and Forest, Claremont KY where he enjoyed engaging families in identifying plants and trees in their habitats.
He is survived by his wife Paula (Koehler) Keppie; children Daniel (Nathalie); Nathan (Danielle), and Christina (Teddy) Keppie; his former wife Leslie (Niehoff) Keppie; sister Katherine Swartz; grandchildren Jacob and Zoe Keppie; stepsons Jeremy Long and Devin French, several nieces and nephews; and step grandchildren Calvin and Theo Long, and Avicenna French-Gaines.
