He was born in Rockford, Illinois on December 4, 1940, to the Sweeny family. He was adopted by Doris Pixler Cross, and Howard Cross, of Belvidere, Illinois, who have preceded him in death.
Also, preceding him in death are his brothers, Edward Sweeney, Darrell Sweeney, and Bill Sweeney; and sisters Barbara Oakley, Pam Pruitt, and Kathy Sweeney.
He is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Judy Coy Cross; his children Dana (Lionel) Alford and David (Carrie) Cross; his sisters, Karen Cross, Carol (Bill) Guthrie, Penny Sweeny; his grandchildren, Shelby Alford, Luke Cross, and Graham Cross; and many nieces and nephews.
He was the hands and feet of Jesus, with a servant's heart. He wanted his legacy in life to be known as a good person, that helped his fellow man. He did exactly that, he had a heart of gold and was a big teddy bear. He was a devoted family man and loved his family fiercely.
One of his proudest accomplishments was his 4 years in the U.S. Air Force, serving our country. He was stationed at Snow Mountain in Fort Knox, KY , where he was introduced to Judy, the love of his life, his wife. He continued to live in Kentucky, where they raised their family in Louisville, Ky. He worked 38 years at Western Electric/Lucent as an installer of phone equipment, and later cell phone towers. He traveled a lot with his job, and his young family went with him. As his children got older, he would travel without them, so they could go to the same high school for 4 years, but he always managed to make it home every or every other weekend.
He was a huge jokester, and always tried to make people laugh and have fun. I think he knew every "'Dad joke" ever written.
His favorite pastimes were gardening, fishing, scouting, and boating.
He was a member at St. Gabriel's church for 52 years, and was heavily involved with the scouting program at the church. He had a host of friends, that stayed together even after their boys were out of scouting. They called themselves "POGS" Parents of Grown Scouts. His love for volunteering followed him his whole life. He cut grass for years at St. Gabriel's, and shoveled snow for widows in the neighborhood, among other things. His favorite volunteer job was at the J-town Senior Center, where he did many things. His most beloved thing to do was to plan trips for all the Seniors, and drive the bus. He also loved his Fridays, picking up food with his friend, George, and distributing it to the people at the center. Job well done, good and faithful servant. Heaven has gained an angel, and his legacy will live on.
