Georgenia Delores Thompson came into this world on October 28, 1952, as God’s blessing to Rev. George Maize Sr. & Sis. Norma Knight- Maize. After sometime both of our parents divorced and remarried and Genia was the oldest daughter of ten children birth by (our) mother whom she loved and cherished dearly. After mom’s death in May of 2005 Genia passionately assumed the role as our “matriarchal nurturer”.
Genia came to know the Lord personally at an early age and was baptized by her uncle who pastored the Original New Ark Baptist Church. She loved Jesus and would grow in experiencing a life of love and forgiveness mainly under the pastorate of Rev. J.T. French Sr. at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist on Vermont St. in the west end of Louisville KY.
After graduating from Male High School, Genia earned a business associates degree and went on to serve her community as an administrator for the Louisville Police Department for twenty-one years. In 1976 she married Robert Thompson Jr. and they were parents of her only child, Robert Thompson III, a
veteran of the United States Navy.
Six months after the death of her mother, Norma Knight- Shelby, Genia suffered from a spinal stroke and lived the rest of her seventeen years of life from a wheelchair. Genia was known for dealing with both blessings and challenges “Genia’s way” and by God’s grace, hardly complained! Not only was this sister that matriarchal mentor for her siblings but a loving neighbor, and one who ministered by way of cards, phone and emails to family and friends at home and abroad! With her loving yet candid personality and professional background, she in many ways became our very own “President of Home-Land Security”! (smile) Many were impacted by this faithful servant of God who will be missed!
Georgenia leaves in this life to honor her memory: her devoted son, Robert and his wife Mona; four grandchildren – Ashanti, Adam, Aliya & Aaron; a beloved host of immediate and extended family members; neighbors and friends!
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 pm at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven (4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville KY 40218), and the burial immediately to follow at Highland Memory Gardens in Mt. Washington, Ky.
In lieu of the expression of flowers for sympathy, donations can be made to the 41st Street Family Care Center Inc., P.O. Box 724, Louisville KY 40201.
