A resident of the Treyton Oak Towers community, Gladys was a living testament to her favorite adage, “A stranger’s just a friend you haven’t met.”
She was born in Buffalo, New York on May 21, 1926 and was the daughter of George and Mary Savini Marshall.
She was the center of her family, survived by five children: Gerald Troidl, Jr (Patty) of Lancaster Ohio; Jacquelyn Burkey (Gene) of Louisville, Ky.; Janel Temple (Mich Musacchio) of Louisville, Ky.; Jill Pike (Ron) of Payneville, Ky.; and Judy Flavell (Vigs Chandra) of Richmond, Ky. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren Catherine, Lizzy, Nick, Rob, Jessica, Amanda, Tonya, Michael and Matthew, and preceded in death by Lee; 16 great grandchildren and four great-great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband Gerald Troidl, Sr. and her brothers Ralph and Chuck Marshall.
Gladys retired from a career of civil service as a supervisor at the Fort Knox Transportation Motor Pool. Committed to serving others, she volunteered at the Robley Rex VA Medical Center and Habitat for Humanity and served on numerous committees at Treyton Oak Towers. She followed in her mother’s footsteps as a loyal election officer. In 2012, she received the Governor’s Citation of Excellence for her decades of volunteer service.
A Kentucky Colonel and a nominee for the University of Louisville’s Optimal Aging Award, Gladys stayed active with yoga and exercise classes. She enjoyed travel, family gatherings, relaxing time with her grand-pets, and fellowship with her TOPS groups from Vine Grove and Louisville. She was a proud team member of the Derby City Roller Girls, selling tickets at the door and earning her Roller Derby name “G-Money.” She was a stalwart UK Wildcat fan in the heart of Cardinal country, a card shark, a bit of a Beat poet, a scrappy Scrabble player, and the only one to make the Thanksgiving gravy. Her zest for life, curiosity, creativity, mischievous humor, perseverance, and sense of adventure inspired her family and delighted all who knew her.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, July 3, at 11 a.m. at St. Frances of Rome Church, 2119 Payne St, Louisville, KY. A memorial service and gathering will follow at 12 pm (noon) at Holy Trinity Clifton Campus center which is adjacent to the church. The venue requires unvaccinated people to wear masks.
