In my earlier note I forgot to mention something. I described how in the 3rd or 4th grade the teachers (Nuns) gave us all an IQ test and Jimmy Roby got the highest score in the whole class. What I forgot to put in is this: Because of his high IQ, the teacher and the principal decided to move him up a grade, which meant a new classroom. No one else was moved up. Jimmy did not like this. He wanted to be with his friends, his buddies. So he refused to do any classwork. Nothing the teacher did to get him to do the work worked. Eventually they had to move him back to his original grade, where he could be with me, Pat Riggs, Charlie Richardson, and all the rest of us. This is what he wanted and so he started doing his classwork again. Many years later at Trinity High School, he did a similar thing to get into the classroom he wanted to be in.  He went after what he wanted. Frank Schmidt, his second cousin. 

I remember Jimmy and my brothers, Marion and Phillip hanging out in the late 50’s early 60’s as teenagers. The Navy Blue pin striping he performed on Marion’s Baby Blue 1956 Ford, White Convertible Top is still pictured in my mind. When my Mom ( Rita Allgeier Bischoff)passed away this past summer Jimmy and I got a chance to relive some of the days gone by. He remembered working on the Bischoff Family Farm on Six Mile Lane, picking up potatoes and bailing hay. At lunch time, where he was always welcome at Mom’s kitchen table, he said she always had a feast prepared. Though gone, memories remain.

When I was a little girl, I found myself extremely attached to a little doll. She wore blue pajamas with white flowers and there was a little tuft of blonde hair that poked out from under her bonnet. Wherever I went, she was there. Being my constant companion soon took its toll on my little friend, and she began to lose her filling all around the house. Dad quickly realized that if he wanted to find me, all he had to do was follow the trail of beans and I’d be there. Thus, my nickname was born! He rarely, if ever, called me Heather. I was always known to him as “Beans.” I would give anything to hear him say it again.  

I was Jimmy’s first wife, the mother of his children, we married when he was 18 and I was 16! I thought he was the most wonderful person in the world and he knew everything! And, I still do to this day! We were always able to co-parent and remain friends. He was my one true love! To my surprise as I was taking him to the Dr last week, he said I need to tell you something, my heart dropped stomach churned, I was all ears, what, what is it? He said the years we had together, in that little house , with the girls, were the happiest years of my life. I am shaking as I write this, so many people already knew how I felt about him! I told him  that I felt the same and I shared this with your mother years ago! I said I need a hug, and he held me tight! All those years were wasted and we never knew how each other felt! Probably the wrong place to be sharing this, But I will never get the chance to share it again! Don’t go to bed tonite , if there is someone you need to open up to , do it! I have loved him forever, but forever was not long enough..

I am very sad to learn of Jim's death. Jimmy Roby was my second cousin (on my father's side). We went to school from the first grade through graduation from Trinity.  At St. Edwards Elementary in the 4th grade, they gave us all an IQ test, and Jimmy Roby had the highest score in the class. Later he was in my Boy Scout Patrol. As patrol leader, I took the patrol on a snowy winter camping trip way back in the woods. That night, Jimmy put his shoes too close to the fire to dry out, and the next morning both toes had burned completely off and his socks had burned up too. He had to walk back to our house with his bare toes stuck out into the snow. He lived with his mother on Billtown Road in Jeffersontown. We used to go out to this house and cook hot dogs on a kerosene stove he had in a shed. By High School he was already flame-painting cars for people, something he later did all his life.

I loved talking to Roby.  He was opinated, witty and funny. He would come into the Fern sign shop to letter golf bags.  He was a friend of Mike Thornsberry & his daughters.  He would come to Fern to see us. 

I grew up watching him work, I was always amazed. He said several times, "Chris, you could do this" I wish. Handwriting was my thing, straight or curved lines the same width, was beyond my ability. But I'm glad that he thought I could 😊

I wish I had a dollar for every pinochle game I played with Jim Sonny & Judy!! We were rivals when it came to pro football,  I was an avid Cowboys fan and he hated them. I live in FI, but saw Jim a few yrs ago while in Lou. for the summer. I have many ,many memories of Jim and will miss him. May God be with Chris and Heather during this sad time.  Rest in peace Jim.

Jimmy was a great neighbor. I will not forget his dedication and care for his mother. I miss him.
