

Jessie B. Fleming, born on November 6, 1928 in Hickman County, Tennessee to the union of Claude and Jessie Scates, moved to Louisville, Kentucky in 1957 from Nashville, Tennessee. She was the youngest of six siblings: Inez Ferguson, Eugene Scates, Mary McGill, Claude Scates and Roy Scates.
Jessie B. Fleming was baptized 72 years ago and remained a dedicated Christian and servant of the Lord. She served as Sunday school teacher for 40 years and Usher for 21 years at the Midwest Church of Christ. She was a member of the West Broadway Church of Christ.
Jessie B. Fleming graduated from the Nashville Christian Institute in Nashville, Tennessee in 1948, where she was a member of the Girls Basketball Team. She completed her nursing training at Vanderbilt Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee in 1950.
Jessie B. Fleming, called to serve as a Nurse for 53 years, worked early in her career at Vanderbilt and Meharry Hospitals in Nashville, Tennessee. She worked at Children’s, Red Cross and Methodist Hospitals in Louisville, Kentucky, before retiring from St. Anthony Medical Center in 1993 after 29 years of service. After retirement, she continued nursing part-time until 2003 at James S. Taylor Memorial Home, Chapel House and Friendship House.
Jessie B. Fleming was married to Early Melvin Fleming and has two children: Marion R. Johnson and Angela T. Ingram; two devoted son-in-laws: Allen J. Johnson and Mark A. Ingram; grandchildren: Kristie T. Smith (Andre’) and Brittney N. Smith (Fred); great-grand children: Kristen T. Smith, Kennedi T. Smith and Brent J. Smith; honorary children: Deborah M. Spears (Kirk) and Elma Blackwell (John); nieces: Elizabeth Keys, Claudia McGill and Debora McGill; nephews: Dwyanne McGill, Claude Scates and Ronnie Scates; sister-in-law: Marion Scates (Claude); devoted friend: Maxine Horton (George); and devoted caregivers: Dewanzer Dawson (Ian) and Ethel Ingram (Otto).
Jessie B. Fleming was known for her stylish hats, cooking, love of shopping and being an avid fan of the University of Louisville Cardinals.
Jessie B. Fleming, a woman of strength and dignity, answered the call to live a life of service to others.
The Celebration of Life will be held at West Broadway Church of Christ, 3941 W. Broadway Street, Louisville, Kentucky at 12 Noon on Saturday, February 11, 2012. Visitation will be held on Friday, February 10, 2012 from 2:00-8:00PM at Evergreen Funeral Home, 4623 Preston Highway, Louisville, Kentucky 40213. Entombment will be at Evergreen Mausoleum.
