

Colonel John Edward Aubrey, a dedicated public servant and beloved family man, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, at the age of 86. Born on January 15, 1939, in Louisville, Kentucky, he was the cherished son of the late Clem T. and Helen F. Aubrey.
John's remarkable career in law enforcement began with the Louisville Police Department, where he served for 28 years, ultimately retiring as Chief of Police. His commitment to public safety and community service led him to be elected Sheriff of Jefferson County in 1999, a position he held with honor and distinction for seven consecutive terms, making him the longest-serving Sheriff in the county's history. Known as a "Cop’s Cop," John exemplified leadership and camaraderie, always prioritizing his deputies and embodying the motto of the National Sheriff's Association: "No Sheriff Stands Alone." His selfless acts of service generously providing resources to fellow Sheriff's agencies.
John's dedication to law enforcement was matched only by his commitment to education. He earned both Undergraduate and Master's degrees in Criminal Justice Administration from the University of Louisville and graduated from prestigious programs, including the FBI National Academy, Southern Police Institute and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. His accolades include; National Sheriff of the Year 2025, former President of the National Sheriff's Association 2014-2015, Kentucky Sheriff of the Year and receiving the Southern Police Institute Alumni of the Year award, among many others. After 32 years of service to the United States Army Reserve, he retired with the rank of Colonel.
Beyond his professional achievements, John was a man of deep compassion and community spirit. He served as the Charity Chairman of the Knights of Columbus during the Kentucky Derby Festival, raising funds for over 20 local charities. He was a strong supporter of the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, the Kentucky Sheriff’s Boys & Girls Ranch, Crime Stoppers Program, and Street Heat Band who played at elementary schools across Kentucky with messages of "Say No to Drugs & Violence and Stay in School". All reflecting his unwavering commitment to helping others.
John cherished the simple pleasures in life, particularly his time spent on the river aboard his beloved houseboat, The Crumb Snatcher. He found joy in the company of his family, including his wife, Bobbie Jean Aubrey; his son, John Michael Aubrey (Amanda); three grandchildren, Courtney Hectus (Joey), Charlee Jean Aubrey, and Samantha Gail Aubrey; two great-grandchildren, Bella Jane Hectus and Lily Jean Hectus; and his sister, Cecelia Haley (Donald), several nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held from 11 AM to 6 PM on Wednesday, October 1, 2025, at Southeast Christian Church, located at 920 Blankenbaker Parkway, Louisville, KY 40243. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 AM on Thursday, October 2, 2025, at Southeast Christian Church, with burial to follow at St. Michael Cemetery.

Colonel Aubrey leaves behind a legacy of integrity, service, and love that will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. His unwavering dedication to his family, community, and profession will be remembered fondly by many.
