

John was born on August 28, 1954, in Louisville to Chester and Verna Murphy. He graduated Waggener High School in 1972, and went on to attend the University of Louisville, graduating in 1976 with a Bachelor's degree in Business Management. He was a proud member of the Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity.
John was a hard worker, starting with working with the family on its multiple real estate holdings. In high school and college, he also worked for the Courier Journal, first as a paperboy and then as a route manager. After graduating from UofL, John began working for the Commonwealth of Kentucky as a tax auditor. In addition, John was a licensed auctioneer and served as a Jefferson County Deputy Sheriff for a period of time.
John was an avid boater, which was an interest he shared with his parents and brother. He was a longtime member and also a member of the board of American Turners.
John was a member of CrossRoads Christian Church (formerly Bethel/St. Paul). Waiting for John in Heaven were his parents; his brother, Gary Murphy; his father-in-law Elliott Mitchell; and his most cherished puppies, Muffin, Duffy, and Beau.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife of almost thirty years, Melanie Mitchell Murphy; his sister-in-law Carolyn Murphy; his niece Kristin Scarboro; his nephew Patrick Murphy (Jerri); his great-nephews Craig Scarboro (Paige) and Connor Murphy; his great niece Molly Murphy; his first cousin Terry Jones (Ken); his second cousins Kenny Jones (Jill) and Ross Jones (Shay), and their families. He is also survived by his mother-in-law Peggy Mitchell.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, February 19, 2026, from 4:00 PM - 8:00 PM, at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, Kentucky, 40218. A funeral service in John's honor will follow on Friday, February 20, 2026, at 12:00 PM at the funeral home. John will be laid to rest in Resthaven Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be made in his honor to the Animal Care Society, or the animal care/rescue organization of your choice.
