Born on May 22, 1943, in Louisville, John lived a life marked by dedication, craftsmanship, faith, and a deep and steady love for his family. To those who knew him best, he was simply Papa — gentle, loyal, and happiest surrounded by the people he loved.
A proud member of St. Louis Bertrand Catholic Church, Papa grounded his life in faith and service. He built a long and respected career as a licensed plumber with Local 502, known for his skill and integrity. He was also a Freemason, a farmer, and a retiree of Stuart Mechanical. His love for the land and livestock was reflected in his longtime membership in the Cattleman’s Association.
Papa also loved live music, especially the joy of being out among good people and good sound — a simple pleasure that always brought a lightness to him.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Marilyn Lee O’Bryan Preher; his son, John Bernard Preher III; and his parents, Mary Virginia Preher and John Bernard Preher, Sr.
He is survived by his daughters, Kimberly J. Preher and Leigh Ann Duque (Francis); his grandchildren, Olivia L. Pilcher (Nick), Hannah E. Melo-Duque (Jose), John C. Duque, and Garrett M. Duque (Katia); his great-granddaughter, Norah L. Stone; and his sister, Gayle P. Weigel.
Family and friends may visit on Thursday, November 20, 2025, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Arch L. Heady Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road Louisville, KY 40218.
