Johnnie M. Sherwood

Johnnie was born in Garrard County, KY to John and Axie Yeager Morgan. She grew up there, living on a farm, the youngest of nine children – 5 girls and 4 boys. She graduated from Lancaster High School and EKU. She was a typist for many years, working from home, typing doctoral theses for Seminary students. She also worked in child care for Christ Church School.

She was a longtime member of Crescent Hill Baptist Church where she was a frequent nursery worker and a regular contributor of baked goods for church functions. Besides babies and baking, she enjoyed quilting, sewing and other crafts. She also loved her cardinals, both the birds and the U of L basketball team.

Johnnie and Thomas spent years on Crescent Hill’s dartball team. She was a 7-time Crescent Hill Church Dartball League Womens’ Home Run Champion, with trophies to show for it. They were also active with United Crescent Hill Ministries, taking trips all over the U.S. and the world.

Johnnie was preceded in death by her husband Thomas C. Sherwood, sisters Sylvia, Senia, and Jewell and brothers Cecil, Gilbert, Joe and Charles.

She is survived by her children, Joel Thomas Sherwood (Mary Anne) and Melissa Sherwood Hofmann (Richard), grandchildren, Bradley and Alexander Sherwood and Emily Hofmann, and a sister, Ruby Meadows. She is also survived by her devoted cat Kate.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday August 11, 2021 from 3-8 pm at Arch L. Heady - Cralle Funeral Home. 2428 Frankfort Ave. A funeral service will be held at Crescent Hill Baptist Church, 2800 Frankfort Ave, at 11am on Thursday, August 12, 2021 with interment to follow at Cave Hill Cemetery.
