He proudly served his country for 3 years in the US Army and later retired from UPS as a truck driver. Joseph was a member of Lyndon Christian Church, loved the University of Louisville, fishing, hunting, 4 wheeling and sports.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Marvin Lee Shely; a sister, Mary Lou Remus; and a nephew, Chris Holte.
He is survived by his loving wife of 48 wonderful years, Sue Shely; his children, Wayne Shely, John Shely (Sherrie), Sandy McCullough (Brian), Michelle Knott, and Teresa Flaherty (Pat); his 7 grandchildren, Jacob, Morgan, Michael, Kayla, Austin, Alyssa and Nathan; 1 great-grandchild, Autumn; 2 sisters, Ann Drury and Bettye Holte; along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service to celebrate Joseph’s life will be held on Saturday, July 8, 2017 at 7pm at Arch L. Heady & Son at Westport Village, 7410 Westport Rd. Visiting hours will be from 1pm until service time on Saturday. Entombment will be on Monday, July 10, 2017 at 1pm at Resthaven Memorial Park, 4400 Bardstown Road.
