Peggy was born in Glendale, CA on May 17, 1933 and raised by adoptive parents Terrence and Evelyn Groome, along with brother Jerry Groome. Peggy remembered often singing to Jerry to help him fall asleep. The family moved to Owensboro, KY when she was still young, briefly living first at the home of her uncle Melvin, aunt Gertrude, and cousins Bud, Jim, and Liz Durham.
After graduating at Owensboro Catholic High School, Peggy moved to Louisville, KY to attend nursing school at St. Joseph. As a nurse, she met her soulmate Henry Sweets Collier, a general surgeon at Norton Hospital. Henry and Peggy married in 1965. Along with two children from a previous marriage, Tom and Ann Stewart Collier, they had five children together: Mary-Margaret (Meg), Heather, Caroline (Carrie), Erin, and Henry J. Collier. Peggy and Henry remained happily married for 38 years until his passing in 2003 at the age of 88.
In the years since, Peggy lived in a condo where she loved to be in her backyard to feed her cats, birds, raccoons, possums, or any other creature that found its way to her home. Music was an important part of Peggy's life. She loved singing in the choir at John Knox Presbyterian, and performing as a member of the Sweet Adelines singing group.
Late in life, Peggy discovered her biological siblings as a result of DNA testing. She felt tremendously blessed to meet, spend time and share stories with her sister Paula Rinde and her brother Roy Brown, who passed not long afterwards in 2020.
Peggy loved her family and touched many lives during her journey. Her kindness, her generosity, and her laugh will be missed and long remembered.
Memorial service is Saturday, July 29 at 3:00 PM at John Knox Presbyterian Church, 9104 Westport Road, Louisville, KY 40242. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to John Knox Presbyterian (jkpclouky.com) or the Kentucky Humane Society (kyhumane.org).
