Meril was born on January 14, 1954 to Gene and Pauline (Ashby) Amos in Louisville, Kentucky. After graduating from Thomas Jefferson Highschool, Meril proudly served his country as in the United States Navy. He spent many years working in the homebuilding industry and, after receiving his bachelor’s degree from Indiana University, subsequently worked for the Census Bureau and IRS.
At a dance in 1979, Meril met the love of his life, Laura (Johnson) and together they raised two daughters, Katie and Maggie. The girls never quite grew out of seeing their dad as their hero and Meril never stopped telling them how proud he was of them and much he loved them.
Meril let his big heart and genuine kindness lead him in his life. He was quick to offer hugs and help to those who needed it and his family was always his priority. This family grew exponentially when, in the late 90s, he was able to connect with his grandfather’s family, the Thomassons, who welcomed him and us with open hearts.
Meril passed on his passion for history, reading, and sports (and especially his Kentucky Wildcats) to his daughters and to his beloved nieces and nephews. He was a member of Southeast Christian Church, where he frequently volunteered in a variety of different areas and loved spending time playing trivia with his friends and family at Hoopsters. Above all, Meril’s proudest role was as “Pa” to Bennett Amos-Linares, his grandson and favorite buddy. Meril was brave and funny and will be missed terribly.
Meril was preceded to heaven by his mother and father, sister MaryAnn Depew, his father-in-law Bob Johnson, and his beloved Aunts Bernie Akridge and Louise Thomasson.
His legacy lives on in his wife Laura; daughters Katie (Drew) and Maggie (Connie); grandson Bennett; honorary son Cesar Linares (Becca); Lifelong friend John Dye (Joni); Uncle Harry Thomasson; Aunt Doris Thomasson; and in the family that embraced him as their own 43 years ago: Mother-in-law Ellen Johnson, brother-in-law Bill Johnson (Susan), and sister-in-law Libby Taylor (Matt) and their families. He also lives on in the hearts of those lucky enough to call him “Uncle Meril”, including nephews David Ramey (Camela) and Darryl Ramey (Cathy) and nieces Deanna Gabriel (Craig) and Sarah Depew and in their children. We, along with numerous other extended family members and friends that loved him, carry him in our hearts.
A visitation for Meril will be held Monday, May 20, 2024 from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Road, Louisville, KY 40218. A funeral service will occur Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at 2:00 PM at the funeral home. Meril will be laid to rest in Resthaven Memorial Park.
