Michael J. McGinnis, 84 of Louisville, passed away on Saturday August 24, 2024 surrounded by family. He was born on July 8, 1940 in Brookville, PA to the late Edith Rose Zents and John Walter McGinnis. Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Carole Egan McGinnis and his sister, Sandra Lynn McGinnis.
He spent his early years in New Kensington, PA where he developed a strong work ethic that would continue throughout his life. At a young age, he helped his family build their house from the ground up, delivered newspapers, and started a small business in his garage. He loved telling stories of growing up with his sisters and cousins. He met his wife, Carole, in Pittsburgh and they married in 1968. In 1973, work took him to Houston, TX. It was there that he became a dad and started his role as a coach for his children's sports. During his time in Texas, he and Carole developed friendships they would cherish for their entire lives. In 1987, he moved to Oak Ridge, TN where he continued coaching and became known around town as "The #1 Dad" as proudly displayed on the front of his Ford F150. His final move was to Louisville, KY in 2006 where he loved watching his grandchildren’s sports/activities, volunteering at Tully Elementary, playing cards with various groups of friends, and participating in weekly activities at The Jeffersontown Senior Center. Additionally, he loved his visits to Virginia where he would sit on JT’s front porch bantering with neighbors and watching his grandchildren play. Whether you called him Michael, Mike, Mickey, Dad, Pop, or Pops, it was guaranteed he was always up for a good laugh and a good game of cards.
Michael is survived by his two children J.T. McGinnis (Misty) and Terijo Hofmann (Adam); his sisters Johne Tady (Steve), Jackie McGinnis, and Bobbie Watterson (George); grandchildren Colin McGinnis, Etta Hofmann, Rylan McGinnis and Egan Hofmann; niece Erika Kiro (Nick); nephews Steve Tady (Kira) and Michael Tady (Haley).
A memorial visitation will be held from 2-4 PM on Saturday, August 31, 2024 at Arch L. Heady at Resthaven, 4400 Bardstown Rd, Louisville KY 40218.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Jeffersontown Senior Center. Please mail any donations to 10631 Watterson Trail, Jeffersontown, KY 40299 (Attn: Julie Geurin in memory of Michael McGinnis).
